Benicio Del Toro to be the villain in the Star Trek sequel?

Now wait a minute, does a Gorn puppet master really make so little sense?

I find myself intrigued at the scope of the prospect, at least, it could be interesting. He (Del Toro) could become a major ongoing antagonist seeking to control countless species with a goal of an Ultimate war in the Quadrant, something TOS often hinted at but could never commit fully to doing. The best explanation or 'conclusion' we eventually got to those hints was the Carol Marcus statement: "The Federation has kept the peace for a hundred years". He could have been what they had kept the peace against.

*shrugs* Just thinking out loud...

I would be completely happy with him being a Gorn. I don't know if Del Toro would be happy buried underneath all that makeup.

I am sorry, Space Therapist, I didn't mean to suggest he would be a Gorn, I meant he be a puppeteer to the Gorn and perhaps, others.

I hope everyone realizes that AICN was kidding and were not suggesting in any serious form that he was really going to be a gorn leader.

I'm sick and tired of humans playing most of the aliens.

Then I suppose we can find an actor who is willing to absorb a harmless element collected from the moon into their bloodstream so they can declare themselves of extraterrestrial blood! ;)

But seriously, if they were planning to use Khan at some point would it be such a big stretch to find an Indian-Sikh actor to go along with Khan's established origin? After all, there aren't that many Asian actors in big budget western movies. Faran Tahir was the closest they got in Star Trek and he was American born and raised playing a Cuban Captain!

It's called ACTing. That means the person hired to do the job has the job of PRETENDing to be someone else. Besides, having BDT play a Sikh is not like asking Uma Thurman to play a Ugandan.

I'm looking forward to rebooted Khan. Heath Ledger proved it's not that difficult to top a performance that was a little too hammy the last time around.

Was absent from the internet the last days. Any news about his potential role? Any news on the Rachel Weisz rumor as well?

Any news on the Rachel Weisz rumor as well?

Please let that be more than just a rumor!:drool:
Did that really reach the level of a rumor, though? What I remember was that she said during an interview that she'd really enjoyed the 2009 movie and, upon being asked whether she would like to be in the sequel, said yeah, she'd like to do that. Whether it ever went anywhere beyond that, I don't recall hearing.

Here's another item mentioning that portion of the interview, and it's got a nice picture of RW.

Coming soon: Star Trek vs. The Mummy! Starring Chris Pine, Brendan Frazier, Zoe Saldana and Rachel Weisz. Special appearences by Leonard Nimoy and The Rock.

Oh right, just before Jesus Christ showed up in alien spaceship, and shortly after Spock went back in time to assassinate Kennedy. I forgot.

...a goal of an Ultimate war in the Quadrant, something TOS often hinted at but could never commit fully to doing.

When did TOS ever "hint" at an oncoming "Ultimate war in the Quadrant?"

At the same time that they were mentioning the recent enlightenment that outlawed slavery, put a stop to groups of hooded starfleet cadets assulting alien cadets, and ect. :)

Harve Bennett called; he wants his unproduced Starfleet Academy script back.

One would assume if this is going to be a riff on Space Seed that the exceptionally creative duo of Orci and Kurtzman would be aware of the original Star Trek II script that set Khan up as some sort of a intergalactic Al Queda leading a mass of disinfranchised and dissallusioned rebel starfleet personal and ships (Sound similar to the news today?) There was also the dumb aliens (Sanjay and Mojay?) and their crystal helper robot but the Khan thing as a dangerous charasmatic leader as some false savior with his own fleet of rebel starfleet ships could be pretty fucking epic and quite timely for todays events.
If they were to draw on the original concept and incorporate it with Space Seed over the course of two or three films it could be mindblowingly awesome

Someone seems to think Del Toro is indeed going to be playing Khan. From what I remember the last time around, the Latino Review had a few misses, but overall had an impressively high accuracy rate and more than a few times got there with new details before anyone else.

EDIT:

That was quick.

J.J. says that the casting rumor reported (by an unnamed source) to the Latino Review is "not true".

Oh, well - back to your holding patterns, everyone.

On topic, I'm not familiar with many of Del Toro's movies. Would he be the type of actor cast to play Mudd or Trelane? At least the Mudd or Trelane we know from TOS?

No, not at all. He's the brooding, dangerous type. Casting Benicio del Toro says "villain" a lot more than casting Eric Bana ever did.

Even AICN is reporting that JJ says that Del Toro is not playing Khan.

AICN is just citing the same HitFix comment mentioned in the TrekMovie article.

Edit:

(I don't know what it is about HitFix, but that site has pounded my computer every time I've ever followed a link there - almost as bad as FOXNews used to be, only without the ugly crashing of the browser.)
