Benicio Del Toro to be the villain in the Star Trek sequel?

Name a Taiwanese character. Go ahead - name just one.

Jay Chou - Kato in The Green Hornet (playing a Japanese character)

That's not a Taiwanese character. ;)

I have a deep respect for people of the Orient and I feel it's unfair for western producers to continue to cast them in any Oriental role, just because they bare a few physical similarities. It's like expecting a Caucasian to play a Hispanic character...

I would think an Oriental (are we really using that word :wtf: ) actor would be happy enough to have a good job that he probably wouldn't worry too much about where the character was born...

I am 100% in favour of Benicio Del Toro playing the villain in the next Star Trek movie. He's one of my favourite actors and he is one of the most versatile of this generation in Hollywood.

If this is true, I have absolutely no problems!
Well, he did make THE WOLFMAN remember? :vulcan:

I think I will judge the final product when it hits the screens.

But why is it still happening?

Because sometimes the Screen Actors Guild can't supply a suitable candidate who's available to audition.

When they wanted to cast Bashir's mother in DS9, there were no actresses registered who fitted the scripted ancestry. They eventually located a university lecturer who had sufficient experience as a public speaker to have a go at the role.

Ricardo Montalban was Mexican and played (very well) an Asian character. But I don´t believe in the return of Khan. Del Toro may play a Klingon, but maybe he has a role as a Klingon we do not know. Abrams would not kill Kor or Koloth. They are classic characters.

Who said anything about killing? The Klingon baddie with the big hair survived STV just fine.

The Klingon baddie with the big hair in STV? He was the one who should die. kkkkk

My guess is that Del Toro will play a different character that we do not know. It could be a Klingon, but not the classics. I think Khan unlikely.
For me, Del Toro's character dies at the end

would Del Toro agree to use a Klingon mask and spend hours and hours in a makeup chair?

So do you think Del Toro could play a Klingon who would not die in the end?

I do think that del Toro will be Kor and that does not necessarily mean that Kor will die at the end. After all Kor lived happily until the DS9 era in the prime universe. Also, that does not necessarily mean that Kor will be a villain per se. Kor was orignally designed to be the Klingon version of Kirk, I can see them work together in some form.

I just want him to play the role in the vein of his Fenster in The Usual Suspects. Every time he speaks in that incomprehensible mumble, Kirk and Spock should look at each other blankly and go 'Huh?' and the Universal Translator should explode. I'd go and see it about 100 times if they did this.

Interesting, I'm curious at what level other guest stars will be. I'm thinking more A-list actors might be needed to increase ST's appeal overseas.

Star Trek is an international phenomenon. I don't think "domestic" or "overseas" differs that much.

You know, I really don't think that in this day and age a Latin-American actor should be playing a Indian-Sikh character...
Hey, why not? We've already got a Latin American actress playing an African character. ;)
Saldana's parents hail from the West Indies, which was a favored slave trading route in the 18th century.

He'd be great... as Khan.

That was my first thought when I saw it.
I was thinking Chang. We might find out how he lost that eye.

Yes! NuKahn! I can't wait! Or a klingon, but I really prefer nuKahn as the next villain.

Abrams would not kill Kor or Koloth. They are classic characters.

It's Abrams' movie and he can do whatever he wants with them. Even if these characters were in ST XII and were killed it's an alternate universe and has no affect on prime Kol or prime Koloth.
