Benedict Cumberpatch should be a Time Lord

Just watched the first ep of Sherlock last night. Benedict was great. He was calm, mysterious, intriguing.

Also I really think this is what a Time Lord should be. None of this aloof noncense we're getting from Matt Smith. He should be in control, intelligent, one step ahead of absolutely everyone. A real crime solver. At the same time he has his eccentricities.

It's really sad that Moffat wrote Sherlock as well. I think he got his characters back to front!

Then again, I think Sherlock Holmes running around like Matt Smith's Doctor would be pretty ghastly!

Smith is terrible and I still have no idea why he was cast, I'd have loved Cumberbatch as The Doctor - superior actor in every way.

Cumberbatch is an excellent and fascinating Sherlock Holmes but I haven't been enthralled by anything else he's done. I don't think he's quite as skilled, charismatic and versatile as the magnificent Matt Smith.

The 11th Doctor is in control, hes very intelligent and if the way he dealt with the Silence and he is one step ahead, just ask the silence Also who the hell is more eccentric than The Doctor. Also while Smith may play the role and have some degree in how The 11th Doctor comes off, the director of any episode and more important Steven Moffatt dictates the character.

I think Smith's Bafta nod tells you how good a job Smith is doing.

I think Cumberbatch can be very cold, you can't imagine him having fun with the role the same way Smith does. I've only ever seen Cumberbatch play overly logical, emotionally crippled types.

Wasn't Cumberbatch one of those under serious consideration for the eleventh Doctor? I can't remember if he was offered the role and turned it down, or not. In any case, if it was between the two they certainly chose the right one.

People have very odd ideas of who the Doctor is. Anyone who thinks he's a calm, collected, and passive individual is clearly deluded.

He reminds me way too much of Tom Baker with his voice and delivery. No thanks, we need someone who is unique as future reincarnations of the Doctor.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind an older Cumberpatch playing the 4th Doctor should Tom Baker pass away.

Just as an aside, about 6 years ago Cumberpatch guest starred on one of the Big Finish Doctor Who audios, so he has the connections.

I'm in no hurry to see anyone replace Smith - the naysayers are in the extreme minority, as the guy's already as popular as Tennant ever was: this was proven beyond shadow of a doubt when Matt Smith was asked to perform the Doctor Who Theme with Orbital at the Glastonbury festival last year. Case closed.

But we do now have a new TimeLord called The Corsair that Neil Gaiman has kindly added to the canon. And he (or she) will be looking for an actor...

He isn't even on the same level as Tennant or Eccleston as an actor, I can't wait til he leaves the show and they get an accomplished actor in who doesn't mince about and constantly overact in almost every scene. His crying last week in The Doctor's Wife was laughable.

David Tennant could ham it up, but he didn't overact in almost every scene and could pull off emotion very well. Tennant is a brilliant actor, so is Eccleston. I hadn't seen Smith in anything before hand, and I can see why. He can pull of goofy, that's about it. To say he is as popular as Eccleston/Tennant because he was on stage with Orbital who were doing the DW theme is silly.

Of the three Eccleston is the better actor, but then he's also the eldest so he's had most practice . I fear that if you were to ask the majority of (especially young) fans I suepect most would say they prefer Smith or Tennant over Eccleston, which is a bit of a shame.

I'm surprised you base your opinion on the fact you hadn't seen Smith in anything before, personally I base my opinions on how someone plays a role. For example Eccleston was vastly different as the Doctor to how I'd seen him as anyone else.

The only other things I've seen Smith in was the first episode of a crime drama where he was the detective's comedy sidekick, and Christopher and his Kind which was on a few months back. He was actually quite good in that.

Tennant can clearly act, but even when he tones it down, even in his quieter moments, you can just just see he's bursting to emote and/or gurn. First thing I saw him in was Harry Potter and I thought then "I hope he isn't going to pull faces like that all the time when he's the Doctor"...unfortunately he did far too often.

I still liked him however.

I think Smith has more of a range than people think. His quite little speech to Amy before he went to his death in the Pandorica in The Big Bang was lovely, as was his speech by Amelia's bed.

Really? I didn't like them because they were a bit pants and overly pretentious...actually I quite liked the third, it was hilarious in places...

Smith, Cumberbatch, Tennant & Eccleston are all great actors though based on what I've seen Eccleston is the weaker theatre actor (he was acted off stage by Gillian Anderson in the Dolls House) and his intensity comes off best in TV roles.

Whenever I've seen the others in the theatre their performances have been top notch particularly Tennant in Hamlet (much better than other recent high profile Hamlet's Jude Law & Rory Kinnear - looking forward to seeing how Michael Sheen matches up)

Smith was great in Christopher (though personally I thought the actual story/script was pretty poor though that could be because I'd just read a biography of Isherwood and the TV show was quite superficial in comparison). Never seen Cumberbatch or Tennent in anything else on TV.

It would be interesting to see Cumberbatch in Who - and he has a strong Who connection as his mother has been in the show quite a few times.
