Ben Browder in DW Western episode...

Getting a big name guest star is nice and all but unless it's a good story it's a waste. An unknown actor can make a good story but even well know actors can't do much if the materal isn't there. The smacks more of a marketing ploy with the help of BBCA.

I just saw this on my Facebook news feed. My level of anticipation for the next season just broke through the roof (not I wasn't excited already)! The star of my second favorite science-fiction show guest starring on my favorite science-fiction show? What's there not to love? :D

I had a huge smile when I saw it a few hours. Very much wonderful news. Today I was able to get two piece of news regarding Ben. The other was about a convention appearance for Ben.

Niether of which are Americans.

Who said they were?

I said US Cult TV icon; which he is, regardless of nationality.

JRoss.

I thought Shpard was pretty much American now, in the same way Gillian Anderson is now officially British (in my head!) :)

I read somewhere Idris Elba's in ep 4.

Now that'd impress me more than Browder.

He wouldn't make a good Doctor though, 007 maybe, but not the Doctor.

He's got a cult following, but he's hardly that big a name is he? If anything he's arguably better known in the UK where Farscape got a slot on a main channel, would many Americans really know him even on the "Hey, it's that guy from that show with the Muppets that used to be on BBC2!" level? IIRC both that and his Stargate run were both cable only weren't they?

As for Sheppard's nationality, it's telling that he's lived in the States long enough now that his natural accent is a rather weird hybrid, that seems to have, in the eyes of casting directors, given him the ability to play any nationality with it. British X-Files fans will recall his rather... odd choices in what must have been one of his very first cult TV appearances in Fire. Where Scully's brief attempt at faking a British accent is not only more convincing than his constant migrating from mockney to Australian, but the rest of the guest cast put together.

I actually thought his quasi-Irish accent in BSG was reasonably good and I have a total intolerance of bad Oirish accents. Of course, it helped that his character there couldn't actually have been Irish and thus was allowed a little more leeway than might otherwise have been the case.

I think the awesome meter on DW just about exploded! Between this casting and the ST:TNG crossover, we really have the coolest Sci-Fi news to hit the 'net in a long time.

It will explode if the Idris Elba in episode 4 rumour turns out to be true...

Unless you've read the script already, how do know it won't be a good story? And what is exactly wrong with casting a well known actor who will bring people who otherwise ignore Doctor Who into the fold? And to anyone who says Browder isn't a big name, clearly isn't aware of Farscape and Stargate's popularity, and yes I know he was a late addition (as was Claudia Black) but he was more than a worthy successor for Richard Dean Anderson.

They could have cast Bruce Campbell and you'd still have people saying "yeah so" except for the millions who will go "oh yeah" just as you've got a lot of people quite happy to see Browder's name associated with Doctor Who. And remember there's still the question of the next companion - no one's saying it has to be a female in her 20s. A guy in his early 40s who is world famous for co-starring in Farscape could fit the bill quite nicely (though I'm assuming this will be a one-off, of course).

Popularity by basic cable standards isn't the same as mainstream popularity. I'd say he has more of a cult following. Although it's true that there's a lot of overlap between Farscape/Stargate fandom and Doctor Who fandom, at least in the US.

Not that it matters anyway. They should get the right person for the role, with popularity being a secondary concern. And Browder's a good actor.

This, two Sci-Fi channels show, does not a big star make.

Of course Doctor Who does not need the big star in the US, becasue its not going to attract the big audience, where as an actor like Browder can easily being a genre fanbase to a show like Doctor Who, and its those who are most likely to stick around.

It cant really hurt to cross promote Doctor Who with a US genre actor guest star, good for the US audience, and British Sci-Fi fans will get a kick out of it as well. It seems a shame John De Lancie has been used by Torchwood already.

I would say however no Stan Lee cameo for Doctor Who.

Idris Elba would be awesome for Doctor Who as well.

Who was the cult American sci-fi actor last year?

Mark (Battlestar Galactica/Firefly/Supernatural/X-Files/Voyager/Charmed/Dollhouse/Medium/Middleman/Warehouse 13/Chuck) Sheppard.

Son of W. Morgan (Has an impressive Cult CV of his own) Sheppard.

Not American.
Already been discussed. Mark Sheppard is as American now as he is British, considering the work he picks up and how long he has lived here. But, the statement was meant to apply American to to "the Cult SciFi Actor" part, not, to the Nationality of the Person. IE: In America (regardless of his Nationality) he is a Cult SciFi Actor

I didn't say the story would be good or bad, just that it needs to be a good story. I can't say I've been all that thrilled by the writing for the last two seasons.

And IMO Browder doesn't have the charisma that RDA had.
