Americans who don't pay for cable or steal cable are so often sedated by contained or stillborn story telling like COPLAWYERDOCTOR or unresolved fauxpseudointellectualbullshit that generates suspended plot which is never resolved like Lost, that it's difficult for them to imagine that all the little bits and pieces taking root in the pilot are going to spin out of control explosivly over the next few weeks. There wasn't a big win at the end of each episode because this is still the beginning of the complete story.

How can you say no interesting plots are developing when essentially you've watched the pilot episode and nothing else so far?

I don't mind shows taking time to develop storylines and I don't mind waiting for payoff even if it is a year or more away--afterall I enjoyed LOST greatly--but on the way there the set-up itself needs to hold my attention and have me curious or intrigued by what is going on and where things are heading.

This series so far hasn't done that and I personally don't think as a viewer I should have to be bored now with the possible promise of things getting interesting down the road so just be patient which is what so many serialized dramas have done over the years. Shows like LOST and S1 of Heroes demonstrated that things can be interesting even if slow right out of the gate. And the weakness of the plot now might be mitigated if the characters were a bit more compelling or the subject matter a tad more original instead of the 100th iteration on the same vampire/werewolf plots.

It was the pilot. The point of the pilot is to get people interested in the rest of the series. If someone watches the pilot and doesn't feel like continuing, it means the pilot didn't do its job.

Because the plot right now on its own isn't very interesting--usually even in the early stages there are some hints of interesting storylines percolating even if you don't know where they will go. But now none of the plot interests me. Who knows it might be looked upon more favorably by me with more context but I doubt it--I tried to adhere to that and stuck with shows thinking they'd get better but rarely was that the case--V, Flash Forward, Surface, Caprica, Heroes post season 1, Life on Mars, True Blood, Kidnapped, Persons Unknown, The Gates etc--rather it just reinforced to me I should always go with my first instinct it is usually validated in the long run and that's the impression I have with Being Human. So I've realized I should dump shows if I don't see some promise.

On the otherhand LOST was great in its set-up--masterfully in fact--but sucked big time when it came time for payoff.

Oh I love serialized storytelling and would actually prefer dramas to all be heavily serialized with no filler like Lost S3-5 or Heroes S1. Some of my favorite shows and storylines have been arcs--Lost, Days of Our Lives, Heroes, DS9 Occupation arc, DS9 Final Chapter, BSG S1, and first half of season 2. In fact, I've complained Fringe would be so much better ditching the stupid one-offs and being fully serialized. I don't mind waiting years for a story to unfold, develop and build before getting answers and getting payoff. I was a Lost fan for crying out loud. So spare me that retort.

I like serialized TV just fine. I watched 24 religiously every year it was on. Same for Battlestar Galactica. I would have done the same with Caprica if it had survived.

No, I just can't deal with an entire series of a ghost whining about being a ghost, a goofball whining about being a werewolf and an emo Pattinson-wannabe being tortured over being a vampire. I don't have the patience.
