Being fat 'is as bad as smoking'

Fudge. I was assuming you didn't know about all the other facts.

Whoa whoa whoa. What are those things?

Ironically, smoking often curbs one's appetite, allowing them to remain thinner than if they were not smoking.

Yeah, tell me about it. Immediate 20lb gain right off the bat.

The weight gain from quitting smoking is from exchanging one oral fixation (smoking) with another (eating, or in my case, chocolate )

Losing the weight now, but the extra 20 lbs is still better than the black lungs and cancer risk.

I only wish.

Quit smoking and *lost* weight.

And I was underweight to begin with.

 I can't seem to get any of this right.

I'd disagree that there is no "second-hand fat." If I really enjoy bacon and steak and potatoes for dinner twice a week, and feed my kids that same meal (demanding that they clean their plate of course, because there are starving kids in Africa!) then the chances of them being overweight are increased by no fault of their own. This is one example, but not the only one I can think of. 18 years of unhealthy eating is probably nearly as bad as 18 years of living in a smoking household.

I agree with this. It is never the childrens fault unless you give them access to money or sugar at home. A child learns what to eat from the people around them.

It takes some serious work to change a childs diet once it has gone wrong, because they are not as "understanding" of what IS bad for you. It is the parents duty to supply healthy food and set limits. That means maybe having to take a conflict because you are choosing not to serve sugary cereal (no matter what vitamins are added on the carton, its still SUGAR in it) and fruityogurts that are sugar-bombs etc. After a while everyone will stop needing the added sugar as much and the conflicts will settle. As you prolly can tell.. I am in the middle of doing this at home and it has gotten tremendous results and my kid is now looking forward to his oatmeal in the mornings instead of sandwiches.
Next step is making the kiddo excersize regulary.

(and before you misunderstand things here. Vilde has special needs and has problems with his metabolism and motorical issues aswell as being fed sugar in his other household.. its not doing him any favors, and we are now taking charge to show how a small change can do him wonders and he is now participating without whining too much)

I grew up eating next to no veggies at all, and I still suffer from an initiate "eww" thought once in a while when it comes to healthier options. It has taken me many years to build up a healthy diet where veggies is the primary part now. I just wont do that mistake towards my boy now especially when he is very easy about what one puts on his plate.

^Exactly why I think I'd be a crap parent. I can barely handle me, I couldn't take the responsibility for someone else! (Except I already do since I'm the "big brother" both to my siblings and friends, but nevermind that)
^Being overweight only cause damage to one person.

Yeah, you get in traffic behind someone eating-and-driving and see.
Honestly haven't seen that much around here. Old ladys on cell phones A LOT though.
