Beetlejuice is being rebooted

Well of course it is.

I don't even mind this one. Go ahead and turn it into a franchise. Could be fun. What are the odds Depp will step right into the lead role? The screenwriters already are working with him on Dark Shadows and the role is exactly his kind of schitck. But I can't envision this project not involving Tim Burton too.
The film will not be a remake; the intention is to reboot it by advancing the storyline of the original, which was done by The Geffen Company and Warner Bros.

The Warner Bros producing deal grew from the screenwriting work that Grahame-Smith did for Burton on Dark Shadows, currently in production with Johnny Depp heading the cast.

Is there any reason why Michael Keaton couldn't return? Age shouldn't be a factor, given how Beetlejuice was hidden under so much make-up anyway. Okay, so Keaton isn't exactly red-hot at the box office these days, but neither was he a big draw when the original came out.

But you're right, it will almost certainly be Depp in the lead.

I actually don't mind the idea of a Beetlejuice continuation, but I frickin' hate the idea of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp being involved. Oh look, Johnny Depp is wearing white makeup and acting like a crazy person...what a new and exciting challenge for him!

^Hmmmm, fair enough - but I do think something like this could be his opportunity for a return to form.

Remember the days when Keaton, rather than Depp, seemed to be his natural foil?!

I would love it if Keaton would return. Maybe then I could see Burton doing it, too. Hell, you can even throw Depp in the movie, but have him play a human that Beetlejuice fucks around with instead of playing Beetlejuice himself.

^ If the studio was insistent that Depp appear, I could cope with him playing a rival ghoul to Keaton. I know a lot of people think Depp is over-exposed these days (and there's some merit to that) but the two of them trying to outdo each other would be something else.

That would be good. I like Depp, but when he and Burton get together he just ends up playing the same creepy character with too much makeup on his face.

But yeah, I could definitely see Depp and Keaton being rivals in a sequel. That could be fun.

That's why it will happen! :rommie: It's like McDonald's burgers. Doesn't have to be great gourmet food, just has to be predictable and what people want.

It would be classy if Keaton got a significant cameo of some kind. But he's not a box office draw and Hollywood is cruel.

I'd love to see Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin and Gina Davis comeback for a cameo, but considering their age and weight gain in Alec's case. It probably won't happen because they're supposed to be dead. Maybe make claymation versions of them and they can lend their voices.

You could easily make a joke about Baldwin's weight and explain how it makes absolutely no sense. It's not like "Beetlejuice" is terribly grounded in reality.

I don't think being dead is a barrier to appearing in this particular movie. For all we know, people get fatter and wrinklier in the afterlife. ;)

I haven't seen the original in years. I think the character of Beetlejuice has lasted longer than the movie itself in my memory. This might turn out. Who really knows?

Explain how this constitutes a reboot.

Reboot = Start Up Again. Could be a Prequel, could be a Sequel, could be another story in the same universe, totally unconnected, or it could be a total do-over.

In this case, it ahppens to be a Sequel.
