Beauty and the Beast: Pre-Release Discussion

Well everyone is French but has an American accent so I mean "animated movie accurate."

It probably won't be a big deal. I'm just overly-sensitive when it comes to remakes.

My biggest concern is whether Emma can sing or not.

Emma attended a theater school as a child (it's how she got her start in acting), so she's not a vocal novice.

I would point out, though, that because the film is largely using the story and score as presented in the animated film, the role doesn't require someone with massive singing chops because Belle only sings 3 times, meaning that even if Emma can't match the vocal talents of, say, Paige O'Hara or Susan Egan, she doesn't actually need to.

I'm not expecting her to be able to sing as well as Paige O'Hara, I just hope she can do justice to the songs.

But who knows? She could turn out to be a wonderful Belle, in both acting and singing ability. I'm hoping for the best.

Anyone else looking forward to Watson being in a good movie for a change? Harry Potter 3 and 4 were solid, and This is the End was great, but she was just a cameo there... :p

Actually, since leaving the Potter-verse I think she has generally chosen well in her roles, with Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Bling Ring, and Noah, all being interesting films with solid (and different) performances from her. I have not had the opportunity to see Colonia but the reviews of it and her have been generally favourable.

This is in fact the least interesting things she could do with her career - another in the line of unsurprising Disney do-overs of their own catalogue... but it will keep her in the media and no doubt do well at the box office, so why not.

Hugo - not quite as old as time

Some first looks.

Not news enough to make a new thread, but Disney's next live action movie will be a Lion King remake, with Jon Favreau (Iron Man 1-2 and The Jungle Book) directing.

That makes Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast. With 101 Dalmatians, The Little Mermaid and Mulan also in line to get new live action adaptations.

I'd love to see a live-action Aladdin as well.

There was an interview with Paige O'Hara a while ago where she was asked about the casting of Emma Watson. She was thrilled. Apparently Emma was her #1 pick to play Belle.

I wish they'd release a new trailer. I'm actually pretty interested in this. The original came out when I was a kid and I loved it back then.

There's also a script in development for a live-action version of The Sword in the Stone.

Huh, you'd think 101 Dalmatians would be on the bottom of the list, since we already have a live action remake. 1996 was only 20 years ago. was that the first live action remake they ever did?

Very nice. I wasn't sure what to expect from their Beast, but that is great.

I've been trying to figure out how The Lion King one is going to work. Is it just going to be CGI animals in live action environments? Or are they going to work humans into it somehow?
I'm kind of surprised the sneek peek thing from the new animated B&B Blu-Ray edition hasn't leaked yet.
They're playing the new edition as a demo on one of the TVs at the Wal-Mart where I work, so I might have to see if they'll let me turn that on sometime.

You mean photoreal CG animals in photoreal CG environments, like Jungle Book? I assume that's what they'll do, but without human characters, as you say, I don't see the point. I mean, I assume they won't use the original movie's audio track, but I don't see how you can improve on that voice cast, either. Do they re-hire the originals and give them new lines? Will Millennials who grew up with the original stand for such a touchstone of their childhoods being remade? Will all the old songs be reprised, and can legit musical numbers really work with photoreal CG animals? Will this all prove to be as unnecessary and unasked-for as this year's Ben-Hur remake? So many questions! :p
