Saurian brandy. Was that all he had left? Roland rummaged through the crap in his servo-locker but the only other liquid in a bottle he came across was that musky Romulan cologne Will Riker had given him last month. "The hell with it" he muttered as he took a deep swig and felt the brandy do its' slow burn down his throat and spread nicely into his belly. Any nasty hangover would vanish in the morning with a little skin-pop from Dr. Crusher's Morning After hypo hits. He still had three left.

Roland sat on his bunk and thought about what Will had told him earlier. Three days. Three more days until they reached Bajor and by then Roland had to come up with a copy of that old baseball flick "Field Of Dreams"- but not a standard slip, this one had to be dubbed in Cardassian. Capt. Sisko was entertaining a certain Gul Botaik and this Gul Botaik had apparently taken quite an interest in the old Earth sport after attending a game on DS9'S holosuite. Will thought it would be a nice gesture if Capt. Picard could present the movie to Capt. Sisko when they arrived. Loosen up the ever present tension between those two a little, maybe.

As a cultural agent Roland had had tougher requests, and certianly stranger ones. Quark's inquiry about classic Andorian pornography dubbed in Klingonese...that hadn't been easy. An old Orion merchant had come through for Roland at the last minute on that one, and he supposed that any time a Ferengi put latinum in your hands with a smile on his face you were doing something right.

After a few more belts had him buzzing pleasantly Roland was dimly aware of a persitent beeping. He looked toward the door of his quarters and called out "Come!" a couple of times before he realized it was his communicator. Chuckling at himself he flipped it open. "Priorty Messg.-Cardassian Dub.Field Of Dreams Ready To Download" flashed on the flip screen. As he started the download scan he checked the return address and was surprised to see "Sherlock Data B Baker Street" highlighted. Roland grinned and wondered just how in the hell Mr. Data had found a copy of that slip and how he had known C.A. Roland Guthrie had badly needed it. But then again, Mr. Data didn't seem to miss much that was going on on the Enterprise, now did he?

When the scan finished Roland flipped the communicator shut and made a mental note to give Ayrla'thys on Risa a hail in the morning. Not only was she one of the most beautiful women on a planet reknowned for gorgeous inhabitants, she had quite a collection of vintage off-world artifacts. Roland thought one of her classic editions of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes" volumes might be just the ticket to thank Mr. Data for his timely assistance. Mr.Data would probably really like that. If Mr. Data could truly be said to "like" anything, that was. And it had been...far too long since he'd spent some time with Ayrla'thys.

Smiling, Roland upended the bottle of Saurian brandy and cranked the volume of his media accessor to "Max" when the Iron Maiden song topped the playlist. He had always loved the classics.

Nicely written, but perhaps a space between paragraphs might help with the readability of this fic. What time in the Trek universe does this take place? Evidently pre-Dominion War, that's what I can figure due to Sisko entertaining Cardassian guls.

I can actually imagine Jack Black playing Roland in this particular fic. Is this a one shot or are there gonna be multiple chapters?

Pre-Dominion,yep. And spaces between the paragraphs...d-oh! Meant to do that. Thanks for the good words. More of this story to come.

An intriguing opener. I’m looking forward to learning more about this mysterious Mr. Guthrie. :)

Nice story. I always like to see the Trekverse through the eyes of a more down-to-earth person like Guthrie seems to be.
One minor nitpick, though: this is a personal pet peeve of mine, would it be too much to ask that you hit the space bar after a comma? Many thanks in advance! :)

Done and done. And I must say, every helpful suggestion has just trimmed up my little project very neatly. Smart readers with a good eye for detail here. Many thanks, all.

I don't know how smart I am but I liked this.:)

Don't forget to break up changing lines of dialogue, too. :techman:

A lot of little plot threads ready to start here--the meeting between Picard and Sisko, finding out what the deal is with Gul Botaik and why he loves baseball so much, and a very quirky new character.

Now, I wonder something--why is it the video must be dubbed? Is the Universal Translator not able to cope with this format? Or is the result of dubbing superior to what the Universal Translator does?

That's gonna be a fun dubbing job...at least with my own version of their language, it would be like one of those Spanish dubs into an English movie...how fast can the dubber talk? ;)

"Rhou sedolokse roukel çad rhou, var bourç’oçet rou’ouk..."

An interplanetary trade agreement with The Intergalactic Performers Guild prevents hard-working voice actors from losing their livelihoods to devices and systems like the Universal Translator. :)

Heh...not surprising! ;)

Though I do find myself thinking there's a chance real voice-acting is superior to the UT anyway. ;)

(BTW...cookies to the first person who can tell me what I said in my last post! I didn't think it was that hard... ;) )
