BBC's Atlantis season 2

I watched some of season 1, when I heard Alexander Siddig would be on a few episodes. I tried to like it; I really, really tried. But.....no. This show is lame.

It is.

Sadly, the wife likes it, so I'm stuck with it.

At least I've managed to wean her off Strictly this year...

I stuck with it last year, but I finally came to realise I just didn't care. I had the last two episodes recorded on my TiVo for months and wiped them off without watching in the end.

It's pretty mediocre, yes. And the reasons for calling it Atlantis are elusive. It'd be more accurate to call it Minoan Crete (which, granted, some believe to have been an inspiration for the Atlantis myth), except it's not set on an island, since characters are constantly journeying on foot to other lands. And it's pretty much just a generalized Greek-myth mashup, without anything specific to Plato's Atlantis. And why they tossed in a historical figure, Pythagoras, and made him nothing like the real person of that namesake beyond a vague interest in triangles, is beyond me.

It's also unclear why they made Jason a 21st-century individual swept back in time/across dimensions to "Atlantis," when most of the time he speaks in the same stilted language as everyone else, never makes any modern cultural references or applies modern knowledge to his problems, and only occasionally shows any familiarity with Greek mythology (he knew what would happen to Medusa but had never heard of Circe).

Yeah the fact that Jason's from the modern world is seemingly forgotten within about 5 minutes it's very odd!

I did like what they did with Medusa, making her a sympathetic character, and Mark Addy's Hercules was amusing, but that was about it!

I enjoyed both Robin Hood and Merlin despite their flaws, but Atlantis makes those two shows look like Game of Thrones in comparison. Atlantis is the laziest and most incompetently produced sci-fi/fantasy show that I have ever seen. It's by no means the worst, but it is the most phoned in.

So no, I am not watching season 2. I couldn't even finish the first season.

Robin Hood wasn't good, but I at least made it ti season 2. I really did love Merlin though.

I'm amazed Atlantis got a second series. I'm guessing it won;t get a third!

C'mon, spill !

Technique ? Step by step guide ?

The guy from Eastenders played a blinder in Strictly tonight though.

Neither wife, son nor I liked Merlin, Robin Hood or Atlantis, so that's all good...

Mark Addy is the main reason to watch the show. He's really, really good. Alexander Siddig does a good job when he's around. And then there's Juliet Stevenson as the Oracle. I remember her as Antigone from the 1986 BBC production of Oedipus at Colonnus and Antigone -- she was fabulous there. Her material here isn't nearly as worthwhile, but it's good to see her again.

Its just a shame they're not in a better show...

November 15th, for those who can stand it.

I (eventually) managed to get through the first season. There were a few interesting bits sprinkled in here and there, but a whole lot of "bleh."

I'm not sure if it's due to the writers, the show-runners, or the directors, but the series just didn't work for me. It must be a rather cheap show to produce, since it's getting a second season. I think I'll pass.
