BBC Two to air The Wire

In Memoriam
I'm glad to hear this, I've been interested in watching The Wire, but I've never got round to it.

From BBC Press Office
BBC Two announced today that it will screen the entire five seasons (60 episodes) of one of television's most critically acclaimed series, The Wire.
It will be the first time it has ever aired on terrestrial television in the UK and the series will be stripped across the week, transmission dates to be announced soon.
HBO's hit series The Wire is a show unlike any other and has won unprecedented praise from critics.

It's a great show. I don't think it's quite The Greatest TV Show Ever that some critics would have you believe (for me, that's unquestionably The Sopranos) but it is up there. It's one of the few shows where I blind-bought on DVD and I ended up buying seasons 1, 2 and 4. Watched a friend's Season 3 but I recently bought it online when it was going cheap, just to have it. Saw Season 5 on tv - it was actually weird watching it on TV at a fixed slot, rather than on DVD when I felt like it.

I've since bought Simon's Homicide book, watched The Corner and recorded Generation Kill. Am intending to buy Homicide the series on DVD at some stage. So you might say I've become a fan of his.

It's a brilliant show. The dialogue just seems so natural, and there's no whizzing around or bombasity. I've already watched through once, and can't wait to watch again, BBC seem a bit slow of the mark though really.

This can only be good news for people like me who have never seen the show before, but have heard a lot of good things about it.

FX had the rights to first showing in the UK.

It's a fabulous series, which never stumbles in more than a minor way. The first and fourth seasons are phenomenal pieces of television--there's really nothing else like them.

And, yes, it most certainly has a political point, which you can agree with or not. But it does present the city in an honest and realistic manner, which is more than I can say for most American television programs.

Will they show it as intended our the horrible BET edit that basic cable folks in the States saw?

Scandalous that it's never made it to terrestrial television until now.

Definitely recommended for anyone who's not seen it yet. Well done Beeb.

Cool, everybody tells me I'll like it, cos it's the sort-of successor to Homicide Life On The Streets, which I loved.

Congrats to British people. Definitely a good show. The first season is such a treat, more like a good book than a tv series. It rewards investing your time in it.

Seen the first two seasons now. Definitely worth a watch.

I loved seeing that prick Ziggy fall apart, I must say.

Many don't make it the first year. It takes about 6 hours to start paying off as you learn the characters.

I did see the first 3 or so episodes before I cancelled my satellite subscription, it seemed to me that it was slowly sucking me in to the story, rather then trying to wow you from the start with gratuitous action and relying on gimmicks or cliffhangers to keep you watching.

Yeah, it starts off slow and builds up. But it's worth it. The last couple episodes bring everything full circle where things established early on are referenced and tied up.

The fact that every season builds up so slowly annoys me since, once the characters had been established, it would have been nice if they started with a bigger bang.

I loved 2nd and 4th personally.
