BBC Four Announce Dirk Gently TV Pilot

^Given how short British shows' seasons tend to be, I could imagine that a single creator could manage to do two of them simultaneously (or alternately). Steven Moffat was able to do both Doctor Who and Sherlock last year. (Arrgh, I wish there were only one way to spell "Steven/Stephen" so I wouldn't have to look it up every time to make sure I'm using the right one.)

^Steven Moffat only wrote 1 episode of Sherlock Holmes and 6 episodes of Doctor Who last year. I suppose it would be a 6-8 episode series of Dirk and this series of Misfits was 7 episodes. So yeah, I suppose he could write all 12-16 episodes by himself without it suffering too much. Though it appears he also does 2 or 3 episodes of Merlin per series too.

I'm not saying it'd have any effect on the quality in reality, it's just a concern I had.

So here it is. The first episode of the series will air first week of March.

Starring Stephen Mangan as Douglas Adams’ self-styled Holistic Detective. Perennially broke and morally dubious, Dirk’s methods are based on ‘The Fundamental Interconnectedness of All Things’.
Darren Boyd stars alongside as Dirk’s business partner Richard Macduff, who attempts to rein in Dirk’s more tangential decisions, keep them both out of prison and generally restore order to the chaos that Dirk creates.
Dirk Gently’s one-hour instalment in December 2010 proved hugely popular, attracting 1.1m viewers (3.9% share) on BBC Four, over three times the channel’s slot average.
In Episode 1 of this new three-part series, Dirk discovers the connection between two unrelated cases; a client who believes the Pentagon are trying to kill him and another who’s horoscopes appear to be coming true. In Episode 2 Dirk is called back to his old university to protect a valuable robot but within 24 hours it has been stolen and a dead body discovered, with Dirk & Macduff the prime suspect. In Episode 3 they are alarmed to discover that Dirk’s old clients are- being randomly murdered with Dirk as the only link. Rather than talk to the police, Dirk elects to leave the country but is waylaid by a series of seemingly unconnected events.

Excellent! Shame it's such a short run, but I assume the episodes will be of a decent length, as they are with Sherlock.

Just 1 hour episodes, as far as I'm aware. I think it's because BBC Four's budget has been cut and drama is very low priority now.

Still - three hours of Dirk Gently is better than none hours of Dirk Gently. So I'm happy.

Dirk Gently really needs to be on immediately after Sherlock as a double-bill...

Did I imagine that or did Dirk say "I am not The Doctor!" in the preview for next week's episode? Which seem to be based on some of the St Cedds stuff from Shada and the original DG novel...?

I'm not a doctor, I thought. If anything. It does look like it's more based on the novel than the first episode.

This one got a bit of a panning wherever I've seen a review. What the hell, I loved it. Manic, chaotic and just a little ridiculous. Perfect. I'm going to have to re-read the first book again... if I can open it without splitting the spine in half. It's seen better days since the last 400 reads!

Yes, so did I. The music grated a little, but I don't complain about that sort of thing (years of enduring endless comments about the music in Doctor Who has totally desensitised me to it)

On my re-read now, and I completely forgot the computer in this episode was taken from WayForward Technologies in the book. It has been a while.

I saw that earlier. Shame really. Also Fades has been cancelled too, and it just won a BAFTA last night too. Bloody BBC Budget cuts.
