BBC Four Announce Dirk Gently TV Pilot

So it's on tonight. Who's ready for it? I'll be watching live and then switching over to catch Misifts right after.

Curse my lack of E4 - it'd be the perfect evening otherwise.

I've not read the book in some time so I may enjoy this more than I expect.

I have mixed feelings about his. I enjoyed it for what it was but wished they had used new characters as it was a new story.

If it goes to series and they base it on the first book then they will have to change that to make it fit with the pilot.

^Not necessarily. They could just do a Being Human and change a lot of it and never mention, air or sell the pilot.

It was okay. I might watch it again as I fell asleep in the middle briefly - long day. I knew beforehand elements like Chronotis and the Electric Monk would be absent so didn't mind too much. Apparently Overman has said they left out a lot of the book so that if they do get full series, they can use the material there somehow.

Mangan was okay, but he's not the Dirk described in the book.

Well, I'm not surprised that they didn't adapt the first book directly, since the plot of the first book is basically an amalgam of Adams's Doctor Who scripts "City of Death" and "Shada." I'd think they'd want to avoid such blatant DW knockoff elements now that the story's being told in the same medium as DW.

It was pretty decent, albeit just an adaptation of the bits nobody remembered from the book. The Schrodinger's Cat scene made it through nicely.

I hope there'll be a series...

Well it looks like it did well in the ratings. Hopefully it bodes well for a series.
BBC4’s comedy drama Dirk Gently, based on Douglas Adams’ novels, launched with a strong audience of 744,200 (3%),

I tried to like it but the guy who plays Dirk is too irritating. I was hoping for someone much more unworldly.

I can see what you mean, I didn't really like his performance until he started stuffing biscuits in to his coat pocket, then later on took one out and started munching, kinda sold me on this version of the character.

Finally got to see it - liked it very much. I've never read the books (no idea why, as I'm a huge Adams fan), so I had no preconceptions going in. The mysteries (cat, husband and missing bloke) were quite easy to figure out - well, mostly figure out - but that didn't matter too much.

Anyway - moar plz!

I thought it was Ok. kinda let down by not bringing in the sci-fi elements until late into the game where as the book has the monk wondering around.

the scene where he pretends to throw himself out the window to get at the files made the episode for me.

why would it be a problem for misfits? another show I need to watch

Howard Overman writes Misfits, so if Dirk Gently went to series he would have 2 series to be doing. Could be a problem whether it's scheduling conflicts or having to write 2 series by himself. Though it likely won't be a problem it's just something I thought could be a problem.
