BBC Four Announce Dirk Gently TV Pilot

I just noticed this in BBC Four's Autumn/Winter press release

Anti-hero Dirk Gently operates his eponymous detective agency based on the "fundamental interconnectedness of all things." He is lazy, untidy, dismissive, an awful boss and his methods verge on the criminal.

When Dirk sets out to solve an apparently simple and harmless disappearance of a cat from an old lady's house, he unwittingly uncovers a double murder which, in turn, leads to a host of even more extraordinary events.

From the author of Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, Douglas Adams, this one-off pilot of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is adapted by Bafta-award winning Howard Overman (Misfits). It is the first time this celebrated character has appeared on screen.

Should be interesting, hopefully it'll be done right, and we get a series.

No mention of casting. Not sure that I'd want to see Harry Enfield reprise the title role from his radio outings. Somehow, he just didn't sound right -- personal thing I guess.

I wish they would get the writers of Jonathan Creek to do this, seems like a natural fit.

I wonder why it hasn't been attempted before now.

Well this one has apparently been in the works for a good long while, they announced it last year and said at the time it had already been in talks for a few years.
Misfits is one of my favourite new shows so I'm more than happy to see what Howard Overman can do with it.

I started this book but ended up putting it down, did it turn out good in the end? Also, how is it a pilot if it's a "one-off"?

^Because it could be a series if it works out, but it's going to be done in a one-off form so it's a complete story if they don't.

In the US they call that a "back-door" pilot.

Also, there were two books, both fun.

It seems to me that this could be awkward, since the first Dirk Gently book was halfway a recycling of story elements and scenes from Adams' Doctor Who episodes "City of Death" and "Shada." I guess there weren't any legal issues where the book was concerned, since it's England and the writers own their own material, but still, I wonder if maybe they'll tweak the story to make it more original.

In the US they call that a "back-door" pilot.
I thought a back-door pilot is one that comes in another show, like "MIA/NYC" was a back-door pilot for CSI: NY but was an episode of CSI: Miami.

It's also used to refer to movies/miniseries that are potential pilots for an ongoing show. The Battlestar Galactica miniseries, for instance, was a backdoor pilot, as was the Caprica movie.

Squeee!

I LOVED the Dirk Gently books. If they can somehow manage to capture the wonderful tone of the books, I'm SOOOO there.

Sounds right- I saw the trailer last night and it said coming soon, which in BBC-speak always means 'in the next 2 weeks or so'.
