Spoilers Batwoman - Season 1

Interesting to hear it’s proper place with Elseworlds. Which means there will be some type of year time jump to catch up with the other shows by Crisis. It could be either slow increments every episode or sudden and fast. I suspect slow increments though.

It’s possible we could see Dr Deegan/Doctor Destiny and Pyscho Pirate in the lead up to Crisis at Arkham. Arrow and The Flash have their own arcs leading to the event.

Because Batwoman's internal chronology is stuck in December 2018 as of tonight, something pretty drastic is going to have to be done over the next 5 episodes to get the series caught up to December 2019 and CoIE.

Another enjoyable episode. One thing I really liked was how they focused on the cosmopolitan downtown aspect of the city. All the other shows take place in big cities, but I feel that's a quality missing from them.

And while this may have been obvious to some, it occurred to me that, technically speaking, Mary is "Dr. Hamiltion." I wonder if that's just a coincidence or if they're going to pull a Thea and show her middle name as 'Emilia' or whatever.

I haven't mentioned this yet, but by establishing Kate and Beth's birth year as 1990, this episode also establishes the Kane family as followers of Reform Judaism since Kate and Beth celebrated their Bat Mitzvah in January 2003 when they turned 13 (if the family followed Orthodox or Conservative Judaism, the girls would have celebrated their Bat Mitzvah in January 2002 when they turned 12).

Already happened, on a different Earth. Amelia Hamilton showed up in season 1 of Supergirl as a DEO doctor.

Anyway, a fun episode. We're past the slow setup and into Kate's growing pains in the Batwoman role. Fun to see her stumbling, and good to see her recovering. Too bad things didn't work out with Reagan, though. She was really hot. And Kate's reallllly bad at making excuses. I like how they tied that into her being out-and-proud and not comfortable with hiding who she is.

I'm torn about whether I consider Batwoman's final takedown of Magpie a really cool superhero move, or a cheat to avoid expensive stunt/FX work with a big final fight. So far, the action on this show hasn't been up to Arrow or Flash levels.

Luke Fox: His messaging program has a Bat-symbol? Imagine if someone hacked or ripped off his phone...

Every messaging app these days has tons of emojis, including bat-related ones by default, I'm sure I've texted a bat or two myself and I'm not even remotely related to anyone in the Bat-family.

Or am I... :shifty:

what angle was she working that required Jacob giving up on his daughter?

Why would you think she was working "an angle" and didn't do it for exactly the reason she said she did?

I hope not. I'm liking the "year one" vibe so far, and it would suck to cut the story and do a time jump so early on just to catch up with Crisis. I'd rather they have the Crisis be set in the future, and have the show catch up slowly for the next crossover, or the one after that... ;)

Yeah, I loved that.
It's weird how despite that she's still better at keeping her identity a secret than most Arrowverse heroes. :D

I also like how they subverted another trope where the "superhero has to hide their identity from their partner and is consequently a rather shit partner who constantly makes excuses, breaks promises and is consistently physical and emotionally unavailable" for a season or two and just had Kate and Reagan have an honest conversation on how they feel and where they are in their lives. I do hope we see her again once Kate gets more comfortable in her superheroing routine.

By the way, it just occurred to me that it was a smart move putting Batman's disappearance 3 years ago, because that puts it shortly before Invasion!, and thus explains why Batman never got involved in any of the big, worldshaking crossover events. I mean, being a loner vigilante dedicated to defending Gotham is one thing, but if the fate of the world was at stake, you'd think he would've gotten involved. So it's handy that his absence is accounted for.

This show continues to be pretty great. I was surprised that the wife just came out and told the Father what she'd done, I thought for sure she was going to give Alice the weapon.

One thing I hope we learn eventually is where Batman went and why. To be clear, I don't think we ever need to see him physically show up on Batwoman, but I do get curious as to why he just gave up being Batman and fled the city, especially since I don't consider that something that Batman would ever do (which is why I can't stand the ending scene of The Dark Knight Rises so much). They bring up Bruce being gone so much that I'd like an answer sometime this season, it doesn't even have to be a big thing, maybe just a message from Bruce or Fox letting something slip.

John Byrne’s decades spanning Elseworlds Superman and Batman miniseries had an older Bruce disappear to seek out Ras Al Ghul. Many years later it’s discovered he took his place as the head of the League of Assassins. To put it to real good in the world.

Something like that would work for me. With Arrow we could discover the Ras we met was not the real one.

That Ra's died before Batman disappeared, though, and Malcolm Merlyn inherited the Ra's name (a hereditary title like in the Nolan films rather than an individual's name). In fact, Nyssa disbanded the League three and a half years ago, although Malcolm created a splinter group called the Thanatos Guild.

I still think Ruby Rose is a pretty poor actor, but I have to admit she's getting a bit better every week so might even be OK by the end of the season, and the show as a whole has been good enough to keep me watching.

The same can't be said for 'Supergirl' which I dropped last season, gave a few episodes this season to win me back and have now dropped again.

I think she's doing a great job. I have no complaints. I think I found her acting maybe a little weak a few years ago when I first encountered her in a Dark Matter episode, but I think she's been really good as Kate. This week, I particularly liked some of her facial reactions, like when she was struggling with lying to Reagan in the opening bedroom scene.

Rose is delivering a bit of a one-dimensional performance from time to time, but I'm imagining as Kane becomes more comfortable in the suit and with her one ally, she will loosen up.

Interesting.

Side note: I vaguely recall Talia making a sideways reference to Bruce a few seasons back. Does anyone know if that lines up with his disappearance? (I doubt it.)

Yeah but in most continuities, Ra's dying and the league being defeated forever is like an average Tuesday. It won't take much to bring it all back with a hand-wave.

I have yet to get a cellphone with bat-themed emoji available to its text messaging software. This is, in my mind, a distressing omission.

Get off the rotary phone...

Watched the first episode last night. Felt like they were trying to juggle too many balls, and Rose was underwhelming.
