Battlestar Galactica getting rebooted (again) for NBS's streaming service

How expensive can it be? About 20 minutes of effects footage, reused throughout the series, standing sets and backlot shooting...

Oh wait, it wasn't gonna be a literal remake of the original. :rommie:

I always had this fantasy of a smartly recast continuation of the original, picking up where The Hand of God" left off. I guess that's fan film territory.

NBC may not wanted to compete with Disney's Star Wars and Paramount's Star Trek, falling back on the conventional Hollywood idea that sci-fi shows (especially ones set in space) are too expensive, prone to production problems, and too-niche audience.

There's also the detail that BG as an IP doesn't have anywhere near the power of Star Wars and Star Trek (even if its diehard fans say otherwise).

I think the new Quantum Leap is a good comparison for a sequel/reboot of a beloved IP on a network.

Well, it went nowhere.

Well, there's also the fact that it was already rebooted into a very well regarded remake. Any new show would have to compete with the long shadow cast by SFC show. Ron Moore had the advantage of remaking a series looked upon as a a cheesy, failed Star Wars 70's ripoff. A lot of people felt he had nowhere to go but up. Any future remake would have to rise to the bar set by the SFC series

Disclaimer: I'm a huge fan of the original series and actually enjoy it more on a rerun basis.

I watched the first half season and thought it was pretty good. Sorry it got cancelled. (If I had just watched MORE of it!)

I think people with money are terrified of an original SCIFI series set in space. And I think they're right. How many shows like that and which are not based on some famous IP have lasted more than 3 seasons in the last ten years?

I am disappointed. I think Sam Esmail is the kind of person who could have made a really good new version of the show. I think it's not about it being to expensive so much as they are likely going to try and follow the new trend of video game shows. They already sort of got one in "Twisted Metal" but I bet they will try and find a way to make the next "The last of Us" and "Fallout." Spend lots of money on something like that, instead.

Right. Frankly I assumed that this reboot was vaporware from the jump.

If they ever do reboot BSG, I want a (more or less) straight adaptation of the original. Maybe strain out some of the corn and cheese, but otherwise I want the story that was told in the original show but with better sfx.

Wasn't this supposed ot be on Peacock, the NBC streaming service? Now, is it just me, or do most people NOT consider it a "real" streaming service? Like it feels more like an extention of COmcast / Xfinity, but also hihglighting NBC content.

Out of all the streaming services, how many people willingly pay money to subscribe (as opposed to watching becaus eit is part of a Comcast package)? I know when i had it, it just was the default to any NBC shows I was watching (like Quantum Leap)

Like, Peacock has some exclusive Peacock series...but are any of them lighting the service on fire (like a Stranger Things for netflix)?

I am guessing the service isn't doing great, so they won't be invetsing in any new series (we will see how the new Gladiator show, Those Who Are About to DIe will do)

I am surprised no one has said "THis has happened before, and it will happen again"

I have it because I don't have cable and it has a few shows I watch. And at the moment the Olympics.

Well if the current trend of business consolidation discussions bears fruit, Peacock may not be around in a few years, with NBC producing shows for the two or three streaming platforms (like Netflix or Prime) left standing. The days of studios with their own streaming services could be numbered. In such a case, the platforms would likely call the shots not the studios.
