Battlestar Galactica getting rebooted (again) for NBS's streaming service

I loved nuBSG, but, seriously, they tried several spin-offs and no one went well. So, what is it different this time?

If the series retells the "exodus" story, we get the thing that made the RDM/Eick series work, even if there aren't returning characters involved.

Bringing back characters could tie into the "All of this has happened before" thing if those characters were Starbuck, "Head!Baltar", or "Head!Six".

Otherwise, I don't think we see familiar characters.

I'm also not sure we'll even get the "exodus" story again.
We could if they made it a prequel. Tell the story of the exodus from Kobol to the first Earth. Then do a show about the exodus from the first Earth to the 24 colonies. That whole "all this has happened before and all of it will happen again" business. They should have don those instead of CAPRICA and BLOOD AND CHROME.

At first I thought they should set nunuBSG in or around present-day Earth, but then I realized we already have that story. It's called Blade Runner.

(IIRC, Edward James Olmos himself has said that he considers BR to be part of the BSG universe.)

Regardless of what they do, I think there's a strong likelihood that the "Daybreak" denouement of Head!Balter and Head!Six walking around 2009 Earth plays a part in the setup of the series' storyline.

The only reason Caprica failed is they made the narrative conceptually convoluted without substantiating the complexity with a coherent philosophical or emotional core.

I’d be skeptical of a Kobol series just because it’s be hard to tell us anything we don’t already know.

A series focusing on what happened to the toaster cylons who went off on their own at the end in present day could be cool.

Caprica failed because it only gave the audience nudity in the pilot. We got a taste for it, but they left us raw for another year before the series petered out.

Is it true that Caprica was originally a standalone series that had nothing to do with any other show, but had the BSG elements slapped onto it at the last minute?

That's what I'd heard.
The fact that this isn't another reboot and is set in the RDM/Eick universe has me a lot more interested than I would be in a third retelling of the original story.

Sort of.

Around 2005, RDM and Eick started talking about doing a prequel spinoff of BSG, but the project never went anywhere. In 2006, Remi Aubuchon submitted a completely unrelated idea for a story about artificial intelligence to Universal Pictures, who passed on the project, but then sent it down to Universal Television, who brought Eick and RDM into the conversation, at which point Aubuchon's original idea morphed into something that could fit within RDM and Eick's version of the BSG universe, which is why both Aubuchon and RDM are credited as co-creators of the Caprica series.

Same Esmail alone should have people excited. The fact it will connect with the new BSG show is even better. "Mr. Robot" is my evidence for him being a perfect choice to do this kind of show.

Which is more what I had in mind instead of a series taking place on Kobol. It could be about the exodus from Kobol to the first Earth. Focusing on a ship, or a convoy (not necessarily a fleet) of ships that can, but doesn't need to be lead by a military ship.

I find when someone is the perfect choice to do something, the results usually end up lackluster. Three years ago? Kurtzman working on Discovery?! Yes please! Now... :barf:

Just because someone has a magic touch with one project, doesn't necessarily mean that magic touch is going to travel with them to the next one.

I loved the 2003 BSG series, infact it's my favourite tv show of all time.

While I am interested to see what the new series is about, I would be surprised if they can improve on the 2003 reboot series.
Nothing can improve on the beginning of that show, but the middle and end can certainly be improved.

Dwight Schrute should be happy.

NuBSG game out in an era where there weren't a lot of alternatives. ENT was struggling and soon to be gone. Firefly had had its season. Lexx had just got cancelled. Farscape ended about the same time that BSG started. If you wanted a space based serious sci-fi show, NuBSG was it. It became more iconic than the original.

The entertainment market is different now, and in terms of sci fi, it's getting saturated. Add to that rebooting a reboot is a different matter than rebooting a one season episodic show. I have trouble seeing it work out.

What I think really helped BSG out at the start was the Sci-Fi Fridays where they had it on with Stargates SG-1 and Atlantis. It can't be a coincidence that all three shows took a hit on their ratings when they split them up.
