I actually kind of don't agree with that. The production values definitely were better than a SyFy movie and Eckhart tried his best with the dialogue they gave him, but the rest pretty firmly falls into B-movie-schlock quality in my opinion. There was one really effective scene in BLA, I will admit - the beach landing was pretty terrifying, but it was all downhill after that.

The difference is that the SyFy movie would realize it's goofy and just have fun with itself, BLA didn't even do that.

Just got back from the theatre. This movie is a complete and utter piece of garbage. They should have called it "Cheesefest: Battle of cliche's" or something...

But you know what? I didn't expect anything other than that anyway, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't having fun watching it. Shaky camera made me a little nauseous at first (I love it when filmmakers go for that realistic feel, and it ends up looking like it was shot by a 6 year old who never held a camera before)... But sound effects were nice (them x-plosions :D )

I'd give it a D+, but I'll go with a C, just for the fuck of it.

EDIT: That scene at the end, when the marines start prepping for battle without even eating breakfast is a classic! They'd probably be dropping like flies from exhaustion and hunger if it were real life.

Eh, that's hard to say without ever being in a combat situation (and it's just as hard for me to say that same thing.) Soldiers are put in situations all of the time in combat operations where they may have to go a day without eating anything and we don't know if our heroes ate anything while they were in the hospital, on the bus or in the ruined airforce base if it was only just simple rations.

Going longer than a day without meaningful rest or food shouldn't be too hard for soldiers to do in tense situations like the one they were in.

where they may have to
Bingo! These people didn't have to. They could have at least taken a minute or two to grab a quick bite. Human body needs nutrients, and if I were that staff sergeant, I would have ordered my men to replenish themselves before going back into "the shit".

It's still a dire and desperate situation, going a full day or two without a meaningful meal or rest is a way of life in battle and not greatly a dangerous thing to do to yourself.

Yeah, I know, but it is irresponsible to starve yourself when there's no direct need for that. Had there been food shortages in that camp, then giving up food for the sake of others (women, children, wounded) would have been honorable, but this was just dumb. WE ALREADY HAD OUR BREAKFAST!

Come on!

Even with all the exertion they were going through, no one is going to "drop like flies" after one day, much of which was spent holed up in buildings.

They didn't have time to stop for breakfast, since the helicopters were leaving immediately. If they wanted to be a part of the operation to retake the city they had to go then and there. All they had time for was to quickly grab ammo and supplies, which would possibly include MREs, FSRs, or at the very least, energy bars.

All of which is besides the point, though, as it would have been ridiculous to end the movie on a scene of our heroes grabbing rations or bravely eating breakfast. A movie is not real life, and some things that aren't dramatically necessary or moving can be reasonably presumed to take place offscreen. Just because the crew of the Enterprise never went to the bathroom onscreen doesn't mean they were some kind of non-waste producing mutants. Having the soldiers restock their ammunition closes the film on a much more compelling and symbolic ending, saying that they're not going to give up fighting until the job is done.

Besides that, soldiers are trained and conditioned to go longer without food or rest--if necessary--than the average person can typically go.

no matter what . this movie is the best excample of military science fiction at its best . this is one the best sci fi movies of the year and Marines rule . why do you think adama used them so much on bsg . I love there mote " retreate hell " .
now off topic just a bit would sucker punch be considered military or steam punk?

battle la is way better than avatar !!!!!!!

No, Aliens was military sci-fi at its best. This movie is cliched writing and amateur direction at its worst.

I haven't seen Sucker Punch, but just based on the trailers it wouldn't come close to either of those genre descriptors you're putting on it. It's definitely not military and I've seen a few designs that might be considered steampunk, but it's far more eclectic than that. If anything, it looks like it falls into the ADD anime/video game shit just thrown on screen that doesn't make much sense genre.

And being better than Avatar isn't a great feat, but Battle LA is not even close to being better than Avatar.

Please. Aliens had just as many military cliches as Battle: LA, and even stupider dialogue. (ex: "Stay Frosty...") B:LA depicted U.S. Marines realistically against an alien menace using classic military tactics to invade the planet. In other words, military sci-fi at its best.

Horseshit.

Avatar was three hours of environmentalist/nativist propaganda wrapped up in impossible natural surroundings and even more military cliches. B:LA beats it by light years.

Battle:Iowa

After the national armies all over the world converge on coastal cities we learn it was a fient as the aliens make a soft landing in the interior. Its up to the Wolverines to stop them this time.
