Batman vs. Batman

Okay, this is funny. Variety has an article up that reports the mayor of Batman, Turkey is suing WB for royalties over TDK for using the name Batman in the film w/o permission. I particularly love this quote:

“There is only one Batman in the world,” Kalkan said. “The American producers used the name of our city without informing us.

Next they'll file suit over Batman Air Force Base being listed in the sites of Skynet infiltration in Terminator 3...

Uh....so they never heard of Batman - the comic character - until now? Impossible, this is nonsense.

btw, I wish I lived in Batman. :wtf:

Well, Batman the character, has been around for almost 70 years and in that time Batman, the city, has never made a peep. Warner should claim that they abandoned the copyright and try to make the city legally change its name. Or at least not refer to itself as Batman on maps. Kinda like how even though the DC SHAZAM-Captain Marvel pre-dates the Marvel Comics version by like 30 years, DC cannot publish a comic named Captain Marvel.

Also in breaking news: The Springfields of 4 states band together to sue The Simpsons.

Boy, you didn't mention the best part!

The mayor is prepping a series of charges ... including placing the blame for a number of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate on the psychological impact that the film's success has had on the city's inhabitants.

I don't know about you, but this makes the movie even MORE AWESOME in my mind.

Did Iron Man make people freak'n kill themselves when it came out? No, because that movie was not nearly as mind-blowingly awesome as TDK was!

Wait wait wait. Putting aside the whole 'Batman name' thing, which is utterly impossible, they are blaiming the movie for suicides? Couldn't they technically blame any violent movie for that sort of thing? Sounds like attention grabbing to me.

First off, I don't know what's so impossible about it.

And secondly, you didn't read it all. They're not blaming the violence in the movie. They're blaming the SUCCESS of the movie. That's right, people killed themselves because the movie was so amazing they couldn't handle it! That kind of thing doesn't happen just every day, you know.

Based on the claim, I think it's fair to say that the mayor could also file a suit on similar grounds for Jackass.

If I were the WB lawyers I would hold them up in the court battle for years (assuming the judge doesn't throw it out on the first day), bankrupting the town. I guess I'm just mean spirited.

I seem to recall in Australia a woman was threatening to sue WB over the violence in the film and the effect that it had on her young son (he was so traumatized by the film she said she needed to get him a psychiatrist).
