Yeah I thought it was just sort of a permanent way of symbolizing that they'd been beaten by the bat so that they don't forget that he's watching. There's a delete scene where Bruce is at a farm watching a cow being branded and then a lightbulb goes on in his head with the origin of the idea. That last part I made up.
Until they get murdered in the joint.
I really thought that the branding was meant to make them a target in prison.
Branding seems a bit fascist.
The moment Superman shows up, completely invincible with the powers of a god, Batman just becomes a schmuck in a goofy costume that beats the crap out of people. Not very scary compared to a demigod. So, he starts branding people, which has the effect of getting a beat down in prison, and people start becoming scared of the Batman again

Why would people stop being scared of one hero just because there's a more powerful in existence? And even assuming they did, why would the prospect of a simple prison beating get anywhere near reversing the effect? I'd think Batman's own capabilities ought to strike more fear than prison.
Yeah, that's like saying you're no longer worried about your personal bully in school because a new bully showed up and is even meaner than the first. If you're still getting bullied by the first, it really doesn't matter.

Watched the UE for a second time and find myself liking the movie more and more. The only drawback continues to be that it's just way too long, and takes far too long to build up to the big battle. And there's also a lot more gritty political thriller in this than thrilling superhero movie, which I'm not exactly sure was the best choice for the story. Ultimately it feels like Snyder is just trying a LOT harder than he needs to to justify a story about Batman fighting Superman.
One thing I do find myself more comfortable with though is this much darker Batman, especially knowing that this ultra violent streak is only something that's been occurring in the last 18 months since the Metropolis attack. The movie doesn't really get that point across as strongly as it should, but I do think it helps mitigate the idea quite a bit, to know that Bruce is simply in a really dark place at the time we see him, and just needs someone to break through and pull him back into the light again.

I thought of the Phantom.
Amazon finally shipped my order of the Ultimate Edition. I can't wait to see if it improves upon the film, which I already gave an A, if anyone's curious.
I'm still not much of a fan of Man of Steel (and doubt another viewing would change my mind), but I really enjoyed this movie, and Suicide Squad as well. I'm really liking what WB is doing with the DCCU and I think Wonder Woman looks great too. I know others don't, and that's fine too, but I think it would be a shame to prematurely end this universe after so much groundwork is being laid. I know that's not a worry right now, but I know I've read (maybe not here, but other places) that some people want these films to crash and burn so WB will end the DCCU
