Batman: Under the Red Hood

There was definitely a strong Nolan influence in some aspects of the movie: the score, the opening credits, some of the shot choices, the hard edge to the tone. But of course it had more fantastic superhero elements than Nolan uses what with the Lazarus pit, Amazo, and so forth.
 
I just like the fact that Judd essentially stripped down his original arc to essentially make this film about Bruce Wayne, The Joker, and Jason Todd. In the recent "Lost Days" mini-series along with Batman Annual 27 it was revealed that it is actually Talia who was responsible for resurrecting Jason in a misguided attempt to win Bruce's love and restore his adopted son to him. I would have enjoyed "Under the Red Hood" more had this element been added but understand why it was given to Ra's as he was used as a framing device. It's such a mature, dark, but also fun film and yes there were plenty of nods to Nolan's verse.
 
The score was fantastic and is reminiscent of the scores from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight but it fits the mood of the film which is violent and dark.
 
Christopher Drake's score is excellent. It brings to mind the scores from the Nolan films in that evokes a very serious and dark sensibility. It's not exactly like those scores, though, in that there's more of a melody to it (if that's putting it the right way).
 
Well, it's hard for me to reconcile "excellent" with "evokes the Nolan films' scores." But if it's got actual melodies in it, that's a big step in the right direction.

I haven't read anything about Jason Todd since he was killed in the 80s, but I seem to recall it was Dick who first got involved in Jason's life. He even wanted to adopt him, if I recall correctly.

He may be referring Jason's portrayal nowadays. Back in the 80s Jason and Dick got on fairly well if I recall correctly.
 
That's right. Jason's animosity towards Bruce and Dick only began after his resurrection.

They did a good job of simplifying and explaining the backstory and events going on for those not familiar with the comics. The Lazarus Pit was the only sensible, in-Batman way to resurrect Jason. The Superboy Prime punch in the comics was ridiculous.

Nightwing is one of my favorite characters but I wish they cut him out of Under the Hood, or written him so he didn't sound like an overgrown kid. He got annoying fast. "I'm chatty!" No shit.

Bruce Greenwood is no Kevin Conroy but he made for an effective Batman.

Jason Todd may be irredeemable now in the Batman universe but he's been redeemed as a character. The only reason he was created in the first place was to fill the void left by the first Robin's moving on. Jason was like a spare tire. Now he's an example of a Robin gone wrong. It's a risk taking on a minor as a partner. Batman lucked out the first time but Jason shows exactly how it could've easily gone the other way.

This was definitely one of the strongest ones to date. Story was nicely paced and wonderfully dark, and there were some really cool fight scenes throughout (loved Batman crawling through the backseat of a car AS it was falling on him!)

I loved the voice they got for the Joker, Neil Patrick Harris was a lot of fun, and Greenwood was good too (although he sounded so much like Conroy I'm not sure why they didn't just USE Conroy).

The only issue I really had with it was the design of Batman himself. His face was so poorly drawn and bloated-looking that I found it kind of distracting at times. But maybe that was just me.
 
Shameless plug, and a complete tangent, but I think he's done a great job filling in for Bruce Wayne as Batman this past year.
 
I really enjoyed this movie, like I have all the DC direct to DVD movies besides Superman Doomsday.

The story was enjoyable and moved along at a good pace. I though all the voice actors did a good job besides maybe John DiMaggio (though maybe it's just me and not being able to get used to anyone but Mark Hamill being a cartoon version of the Joker. I did think that DiMaggio had a good Joker laugh though).

I haven't gotten a chance to watch Jonah Hex yet, though I did watch the preview for the next Batman/Superman movie and I'm looking forward to that one.

I don't read the books anymore but I had no doubt Dick would do a great job as Batman. He never let Bruce down. Never. He's as good a son as any father could ever pray for. That's the reason Prodigal is one of my all time favorite Batman stories. Dick doesn't just take up the mantle of the bat. He was made for it. :)
 
Dick has been fantastic as Batman and Morrison has done a terrific job of handling him and Damien. The two characters dynamic is terrific. I was thinking last night while I was re-watching this again that I wouldn't mind an animated adaption of "Batman and Son".
 
What do you think will happen with Dick and Damien once Bruce comes back? Bruce and Damien? Nightwing and Robin? It seems Damien was brought into the story solely to be Grayson's Robin, it would be odd if they dissolved the dynamic just because Bruce comes back.
 
DiDido talked to CBR about "franchising" Batman to which the interviewer asked him what he was talking about and DiDido essentially stated why can't there be TWO Batmen? They were discussing Grant Morrison's upcoming "Batman Inc." project that was announced when Dan brought it up. Ultimately I think they're going to have Dick as Batman on James Robinson's JLA book and Bruce returning to the role in "Detective Comics" and "Batman Inc." Dick will probably remain Batman in "Batman and Robin" since that is continuing after Grant leaves the title after the current arc. I don't think they want to piss off the fans that have been enjoying Dick as Batman and they realize that Bruce has to return as Batman as well. DiDio also said as did Morrison that we'll see Bruce interacting with Damien when he returns as well in "Batman:The Return".
