Batman Beyond #1 (minor spoiler and a question)

Ick. I don't like that cover at all. I don't like the character design or the style in general.

Please tell me it isn't representative of the art within the comics?

^ That's the cover to issue one...and the art in the comics is a little more grittier than that and something I'm not that crazy about myself.

I'm guessing that the critical acclaim and possibly sales have contributed to DC's decision to bust out an ongoing series. Despite the art for the mini-series which I've not been a fan of, the story has been surprisingly strong and there are interesting things going on within the book. I'll be getting this when it comes out. I can't recommend the Superman/Batman annual enough though either, it really was incredible and could have easily been a "lost" episode in the series. It read like a season finale. The art was fantastic as well.

Finished reading issue four and whoa the cliffhanger revelation isn't something I saw coming. Lots of good stuff in this issue as we flash back to the last Nightwing story and see what happens to Dick. I'm definitely getting this when it comes out collected.

Is that cliffhanger really what it seems? Because the character in question would have to be in two places at once. I think it's a cadmus clone.

I'm really happy that DC decided to give him the reigns of the ongoing...the mini has been more interesting than I thought it would be given the context of the story arc. The art is a little iffy (I much prefer the artist who worked with Paul Levitz on the Superman/Batman annual) this is more grittier and dirty for my tastes.

Issue five came out on Wednesday and was great. We learn who Catwoman Beyond is and she's pretty damn hot and can see a possible revival of the Batman/Catwoman relationship (even though Terry is still with Dana. Bruce admits his fondness for Terry (you get the impression that he is aware of their true familiar relationship even though this takes place years before Epilogue). "Hush" is indeed a degenerating Dick Grayson clone...we get hints of Waller's Project Batman Beyond program and her declaration that there always be a Batman. The Dick clone is resentful that he never became Batman like he always thought he would. The real Dick is scene with Babs who has her arm linked around his in her office at Gotham Central indicating an intimacy there. Great stuff, did I mention Catwoman's hot? I look forward to the conclusion next month and the ongoing next year.

So what started out with promise and built up towards the end, finished with a whimper with the final issue of the mini-series. I must say though that this series really was about the relationship between Bruce and Terry which started out strained but after Terry is seriously injured in issue five and humorously repaired by the new Catwoman with aide from Bruce, their relationship is repaired. We also get to see Dick Grayson for the first time in the Batman Beyond world as far as I know and of course it was revealed who "Hush" was in the previous issue. Ultimately though the plot of the mini-series stems from Amanda Waller's creed that Gotham must ALWAYS have a Batman. Overall I would give the mini-series a 3/5 and it sets the pace for the ongoing that comes out next month. I will be picking this up when it comes out in hardcover in March. Wasn't a fan of the artwork. I still think that Matt McGuiness has a bit of Damien Wayne in him in the one page that he appears in but that just might be me. I would still recommend this for Batman Beyond fans.

I guess I'm the only one still reading...picked up "Batman Beyond #1" yesterday and thought it was decent. Not great. A lot going on. Justice League showed up. Terry's family is put in danger in a situation. Matt is looking more and more like Damien Wayne now even though Damien does not exist in this BBU.

Mine's waiting for me at the ol' pull box. I am looking forward to it.

Regarding the mini, it didn't end spectacularly, but the story worked for me and I'm glad to see there is an emotional core being established beyond just the Terry/Bruce relationship. I was also happy to read in the interview linked above that there will be some focus on the supporting characters as well.

He does actually.

Batman 600 established that Damien was the Batman before Terry.

The idea is that the Bruce in BB might be Damien.

I forgot to add this to my pull list, and my LCS sold out. :scream:

I'm sure I'll track it down before #2 comes out, but still...
