Bat’leth wielding Klingon versus phaser-armed Starfleet officer?

Funny, I was thinking about that Raiders scene and was going to mention it when I read the post title.

Works great if the range is far enough.

At arms reach if the Klingon can swing his BatLeth faster than you can turn and fire your phaser you have had it.

Plus although the Klingons REALLY like to use their knives and swords they do use their Disrupter pistols and rifles as well, look at "Way Of The Warrior" to see them in action.

The fact that the Klingons seemed to handle the swords better than the Federation dudes would seem to indicate that they were pretty used to that kind of weapon already.

But a bat'leth is nothing like a sword. Being good at using one would not make you good at using the other.

I think this sums it up how a Starfleet officer should defend him or her-self against a foe armed with a sword or a Klingon wielding a bat'leth.

In the case of the bat'leth, one should laugh in the Klingon's face, take his impractical weapon away from him, and make him eat it.

For more details, see the new Star Trek Magazine!

True, but I choose to think that this shows they're trained in multiple hand to hand weapons. Swords - or bat'leths for that matter - wouldn't be the only ones.

Well, for one thing, Klingons are humanoids, and any melee combat situation between Klingons is entirely analogous to any such situation between humans--so if bat'leths were actually good weapons, where are our armies of bat'leth-wielding Romans, Persians, Franks, etc?

Indeedy - like I said, see the new issue of the magazine, where I have a bit of a rant on this matter...
