They might have done it for real had Siddig wanted to leave the show: it's an interesting character goodbye. If Bashir's mind had been altered to serve as a Dominion agent, he'd probably be moved out of the service and spend his life in geriatrics.

Wait... Distant Voices is a good ep. One of my favorites from season 3. I will admit it was a bit strange seeing him turning into an old man but it was still a great episode.
