Oh man, she could totally be an updated Elizabeth Dehner. Except, wasn't she on special assignment, not a member of the regular crew?
Now that you mention it, there is a slight resemblance.
Try convincing Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman of that. We're dealing with the original series crew here, a crew that is all male except for Uhura, and they want to make sure that everyone gets their own moment to shine. Everyone else is just a red shirt or, as is the case for this lovely lady shown here, background glimpse.
I find it pretty funny how Star Trek II not only had all the original crew members but also managed to squeeze in Saavik into the mix, a character who stood out all on her own, was likable and well developed. Try convincing these "We can't put Arcee in because we don't have time to explain transformer gender*" writers to try doing that.
*Arcee is going to be in the second Transformers movie. It appears the writers simply said "fu** it" on the whole explanation detail decided to just go with it. Yahoo....
Well, in this NuTrek universe that would qualify him to be captain of the Enterprise.
