Ball bounces off foul pole?

Some of you might have seen it a few days ago: during a game at Yankee Stadium, a ball bounces off the foul pole. At first, the ump calls it fair, then changes his mind and rules it a foul. Turns out it should have been fair all along. But was it?

The ball bounced off the *black* part of the foul pole (it even had a black smudge on it as proof, and you could see the part of the pole where it hit). I don't know if that made a difference. Also, the announcers were quick to point out that the foul pole is some distance away (a foot or two) from where it should be! Was that a problem?

Especially since the black part of the pole appeared to be coming off, like it was either badly applied paint, or a tape of some kind.

It was a fair ball, plain and simple. The foul pole is in fair territory, and it should have been a home run, and thankfully did not effect the final outcome of the game. That pole should have yellow painted down to the base, and that foul line that is on the wall SHOULD be in line with the pole. That said, I don't think anything will be done about it, seeing as how the stadium will be gone in a year anyway, and the chance of that happening again within the span of the rest of the season is remote.

Personally I feel it is another example of the need for instant replay in baseball, JUST for argued homerun calls, and perhaps, and only perhaps, close plays at the plate late in a game.

Why is that foul pole not where it should be?

Cause the stadium is a gazillion years old. Speaking of Yankee stadium, I find it amusing how it was just discovered that their is a sports ticker in the visiting clubhouse, that can be used for betting. You would think after all these years there would be no more surprises left at the House that Ruth Built.

Not the first time this happened, this week. Just the other night, ball was hit to deep center and bounced back into the field. Upon further views of the tape, the ball had hit the yellow staircase in the centerfield stands, thus being a homerun.

So ya, I think instant reply for homerun calls should be used.

Actualy. the pole should be foul territrory.

A ball hits the pole, it's a foul.

No matter which way the ball is deflected.

Nope. The foul pole is an extension of the foul line.

A ball that lands on the foul line is fair, a ball that hits the foul pole is fair.
