Some of you might have seen it a few days ago: during a game at Yankee Stadium, a ball bounces off the foul pole. At first, the ump calls it fair, then changes his mind and rules it a foul. Turns out it should have been fair all along. But was it?
The ball bounced off the *black* part of the foul pole (it even had a black smudge on it as proof, and you could see the part of the pole where it hit). I don't know if that made a difference. Also, the announcers were quick to point out that the foul pole is some distance away (a foot or two) from where it should be! Was that a problem?
Especially since the black part of the pole appeared to be coming off, like it was either badly applied paint, or a tape of some kind.
