Balance Of Terror was a WW2 Sub and Destroyer film in space

Re: Balance Of Terror was a WW2 Sub and Destroyer film in sp

Did everyone realise it was a redoing of an old Word War 2 film called The Enemy Below ? In that film a US navy destroyer Captain has to out think a German Manvy Submarine

I believe that's exactly where this thread started. ;)

I watched Balance of Terror with the special effects redone. Watched it on TiVo. Did everyone realise it was a redoing of an old Word War 2 film called The Enemy Below ? In that film a US navy destroyer Captain has to out think a German Manvy Submarine Captain.
Unless you were trying to quote the original post and forgot the quote tags.

Specifically, "Balance of Terror" is a reworking of a 1957 film, "The Enemy Below." Some additional elements may have been borrowed from the 1958 film "Run Silent, Run Deep," although this is not as widely agreed upon.

Yeah, it's almost point-for-point from "The Enemy Below."

Out of curiosity, what are the elements from "Run Silent, Run Deep" that are debated as being part of BOT?

One film that does borrow heavily from "Run Silent, Run Deep" is "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." Both are, I'm sure not coincidentally, Robert Wise films. I don't knwo whether the writers of ST:TMP borrowed the Captain/First Officer conflict from the submarine film on their own and Wise' later availability to direct was some perverse coincidence or Wise suggested the addition of these elements to the existing "In Thy Image" teleplay. It's been a long time since I read any earlier versions of the ST:TMP screenplay and none of that material is terribly memorable.

When I first watched it way back, I didn't know. I still haven't seen the film on which it was based.

Yea it is just like The Enemy Below with Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgeans who played the Villian in the Bond flick The Spy Who Loved Me in 77. The only thing they left out was the vessels colliding at the end like they did in Nemesis which I think they borrowed that scene from. The Enemy Below was on AMC on Veterans Day last weekend.

My favorite episode, because of the weapons used.

Speaking of weapons, I still have my jet disk gun in your avatar! Still works, too! :)

Had one of those too! Man, they shot those discs out crazy fast. Dangerous, you'd never see a toy like that these days (good thing too).
