Badass Songs: Yea or Nay?

Further entries:

Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs

La Bamba-Valens or Los Lobos, that's how badass it is

Aint Seen Nothing Yet-drawing a blank, in a lot of pain right now

Louie, Louie by The Kingsmen

All of these, IMO, qualify because in almost any socializing group of people in the Western world if you play one after everybody's had a drink or two you get a high-energy reaction, usually in the form of a group sing-along.

Yay to all above...

Something new (to you but has been around a while) that most of you haven't heard, but should if you like "electronica"

Nemesis - VnV Nation

She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult.

Sympathy for the Devil & Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones

Psycho Killer by Talking Heads

Building Steam with a Grain of Salt by DJ Shadow

F.O.D. & Panic Song by Green Day

God Loves Ugly & Scapegoat by Atmosphere

Apache by Incredible Bongo Band

Don't need a Dance -Breakstra

Freedom by George Michael (seriously kicks ass)

Fuckin in the bushes by Oasis
I'll add more later

Obviously not the safest thing to listen to at work.

'Cause you might dance.

I'll throw out a couple of oddballs, I think I could fill a page of songs. My take on badass anyway, which isn't necessarily the same as kickass. :)

Papa Was a Rolling Stone - Temptations (I have been on a kick with this one recently, try it out if you haven't heard it recently)
Common People - Shatner (seriously!)
Love is a Stranger - Eurythmics (Annie's voice is so slinky and compelling on this one, entrances me each time)

Sympathy for the Devil & Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones

Good choices, a lot of the Stones songs are bad-ass. I've really come to like Gimme Shelter recently.

"Why Go" - Pearl Jam
"Welcome to the Jungle" - Guns'N'Roses
"Cult of Personality" - Living Colour

It just has to be your definition of badass in terms of a song being badass because it's everything you look for in a great song.

That too, which is why I said it was very subjective. I also feel it has to make its mark in the music industry and mean something to it. Something you can also look at and say, "Oh yeah, those guys are undeniably talented." Though there are also very talented people that never get their due because the music industry is too focused on the latest thing. In the end though it's a very personal thing. What may be badass to someone may not be to someone else.

Absolutely.

Warren Zevon is a perfect example of that.

I guess I was just curious about the music people around here listen to. I know quite a bit about movies, TV shows, books, comics and the like but not about music.

(Shrugs)

I think "Common People" is a really good song off a surprisingly excellent album.

Almost anything by AC/DC (especially Back in Black or Thunderstruck)

the "old" stuff from Metallica (Master of Puppets, Kill 'em all up to the Black Album)

"old", i.e. original Guns 'n Roses

I've seen all 3 bands live and man felt i charged with energy after the concerts.

She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult.

Psycho Killer by Talking Heads

Building Steam with a Grain of Salt by DJ Shadow

F.O.D. & Panic Song by Green Day

If you are talking The Stones-for badass its Jumping Jack Flash or When The Whip Comes Down.

And let's not forget Blister In the Sun by The Violent Femmes. Seriously badass.

Going back to our George Thorogood(sp? ) fan-How about Molly Hatchet-Flirting With Disaster?

Ooh I picked those 2 songs for the stones imagining I was a prizefighter coming out to those songs.

Also like to add, Add it Up for Violent Femmes

Queen's Don't Stop me Now

James Brown's The Payback

Nirvana's Aneurysm, Breed, and Territorial Pissings

And let's not forget Blister In the Sun by The Violent Femmes. Seriously badass.

That song used to be so overplayed... the only thing it makes me want to do is slap a Hippie in the mouth.

Thunderstruck - AC/DC
Paradise City - G 'n R
Crazy Game of Poker - O.A.R.
One - Metallica
Prison Sex - Tool
Another vote for Tom Sawyer by Rush

"A modern day warrior
Mean mean stride,
Today's Tom Sawyer
Mean mean pride."

dun dun dun DAHHHHHH.... dun dun dun DAHHHHHH....

And a hundred others....

This I find to be badass. It's a version of a traditional song made famous by Led Zeppelin as performed by Great Big Sea.

What's particularly remarkable is that during that performance, the singer had a throat infection, and I find it actually adds character to it rather than hurt the performance.

Jailbreak- AC/DC.
Whole Lotta Rosie- AC/DC.
