That's actually not a bad design, the spheres could be detachable and serve as research stations for newly discovered M class planets. The hero ship is usually in orbit for a day or two max, actually exploring a planet would be a longterm mission but not every planet requires a permanent space station. So mobile reserach stations would make a lot of sense, park them in orbit for a few years and then pick them up again.
I wish I could find one from years ago that started me giggling every time I saw it: a Galaxy-type primary hull with something like forty warp nacelles stuck on all over the place.
I think 'Gagarin' was the original class for the Grissom. Not sure why it would have been changed.
Sounds like the U.S.S. Megabungadude from the old GEC days, and, yes, it was a send-up of all of the fan designs that went overboard with all of the stuff that they put on their ships.
