The show isn't dead. As others have said, they tried to do this same thing with The Simpsons and it didn't work. This is a negotiating ploy, a bluff to try to convince the actors to settle for less money. And it's a bluff that the actors and their agents are going to call, with help from the fanbase.
While you and I might have found the movies disappointing, they made incredible scratch. The studio would find some way to bring it back as the show is now profitable again. The show is definitely not dead.
if this happens then i won't be watching. that'll be my protest to this outrage.
Which is both a shame and a pity. Its nice that the show has gotten a second chance at life but it would have been better if the films thy did make didn't suck. At least the first movie was decent though

In IGN's article about this, they're saying that FOX lowballed the cast from the beginning, because apparently the new episodes are expected to have a drastically slashed budget.

When I read that letter I was just imagining the MP3's that would be coming Scott Muller's way.
This reminds me of when I'd catch Futurama playing on a spanish station and cringe at the voices. Much of the charm of these characters is the actor who plays them.
I personally wouldn't mind if Fry and Leela were recast, simply because Billy West will always be Stimpy to me and Katie Segal will always be Peg Bundy.
