Bad news everyone - Futurama travesty in the making

Billy West voices half the characters on the series! It wouldn't be the same without him. I won't return to Futurama if the voices actually are changed. I hope this is just a negotiating ploy.

As long as Fry is played by Chris Pine it's all good. ;)

You know, part of me does wonder if this is pure publicity. There is this alleged comment from Matt Groening back on June 9:

Writing has already begun on the show; Groening said he was inspired by the "Star Trek" movie this summer enough that the updated "Futurama" may take a similar tact to explain the launch of this run.
And what was the thurst of the new Trek movie? Recasting the original, iconic characters.

Then there is this ComicCon scheduling announcement from June 24 (well after the June 9 announcement that Futurama was renewed for new episodes on Comedy Central):

1-1:45 P.M. Futurama: Life or Death?! BE A PART OF SCI-FI HISTORY! Join Executive Producers Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, and stars Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio and Maurice LaMarche for high-stakes thrills as a top-ranking Fox executive decides live, on stage, whether Futurama will make yet another triumphant return, or whether it is gone forever! The very fate of Futurama hangs in the balance! Paramedics will be standing by in case the intense excitement causes any panelists to collapse. Raucous celebration or abject despair to follow the news. Ballroom 20.
Are the Futurama guys really just doing this to keep hype going about Futurama? Hell, they're selling a special edition complete series set just at ComicCon; this kind of thing could even increase sales.

I don't get it, the DVD sales were a smash, weren't they? But they want to cut the budget and threaten to recast the actors? :wtf:

I heard about this a few days ago and was pretty bummed. I must say that if this actually happens, I won't be watching.

How profoundly stupid the entertainment industry can be. Honestly, one would think that they would have some working knowledge as to why the same actors voice long-standing characters. I can't even imagine Leela being voiced by anyone except Katie Sagal. WTF!

Between this, and the idea of the Buffy movie without Joss Whedon I think they're out to sabotage themselves lately.

Bad news indeed. I heard about this a couple days ago, and I still can't fathom how anyone would think this type of shit would fly with a show that has such a devoted fanbase. :scream:

I can deal with recasting some of the characters... but Billy West, John DiMaggio (Bender?), and Katey Segal better be cast. If not, I have zero interest in them.

At another board I visit, they're on the opposite side, essentially saying "so what?" and if you don't like it, "don't watch it".

Sometimes people just don't get it.

You know how often a show gets un-cancelled vs. stayed cancelled? I can only count four examples from 60's to now. There's a reason three of the four shows were un-cancelled -- fan demand. We, the fans, single handledly demanded the shows be brought back. So much so to the point where DVD sales and Neilsen Ratings convinved execs. To bring back two shows ("Family Guy" and "Futurama").

We ar ethe very reason these shows even had an after life and didn't simply disappear into the void of forgotten TV shows, to be lost in a vault where nobody gives a shit. Caring so much that the money to be made was convincing enough to the New Morons at FOX. This is OUR doing. Without us, this would be another still cancelled TV series.

This move, even if just a ploy to rangle with the vocal talent, is just disgusting. These are the voices fans like myself fell for, these are the characters we enjoyed watching.

This is not only a slap in hte face to the actors, but a slap in the face of the fans who even made this possible. It doesn't matter whether we watch it or not, it's wrong on a basic level. To say nothing about being "thankful" to the fans for our financial support.

FOX needs to make the right decision and quick. At this point, I'm personally (I don't know about the rest of you) titering on the brink of not even watching it if they keep the same people; that's how insulted I feel.

If they actually go through with this asnine stunt, I'll give it a try, but only if the voice actors prove to bring something worthwhile to the change. I'd still much rather have the original voices. It's just not the same when they change a voice actor for a character.

I'd probably watch one episode out of morbid curiosity, but even if I thought the replacements did a decent job, I wouldn't support it further than that...just to take a moral stand against such an idiotic decision.
