Holy sh*t! She was Queen Apailana in Ep. 3!
Small galaxy.
Yup. She did that right after 'Whale Rider' I think.

Hardly the only time an actor has played two on-screen characters though, and Apailana was in basically one shot, had zero dialog, and in full face paint. Can't see any reason why not to use her; she certainly has the action and genre creds thanks to GoT, though it would be weird seeing her in Star Wars alongside Dyn . . . but then most of the rest of House Dorne has showed up in Star Wars live action (plus one in animation and a LF honourable mention in the Willow Show), one might even call it a tradition.

Just need Alexander Siddig!

Gotta ruin Ventress too, Filoni? The man is a menace, even dead characters can get ruined by him. I bet its going to be the brat who beats Ventress, probably with some kids cartoon BS (a bunch of marbles making Ventress slide over a cliff, or maybe a space banana peel left in a spot to make her trip into a space ship engine). At least its almost over. Well, until Filoni inevitably casts an adult version of the female clone to ruin one of the upcoming live action shows (or maybe the announced Mandalorian movie).

Damn.... I'm quite jealous of you now. I mean, you must have seen the entire season 3 already to actually have formed such a complete opinion on what happens with Ventress. Lucky you.

Something I noticed when checking the latest Databank updates; they've already significantly altered Ventress' entry. Prior to the trailer's release a few weeks back, the introduction read like this: -
An assassin trained in the ways of the dark side by Count Dooku, Asajj Ventress yearned to be considered a true Sith, but such status wasn't allowed under the Sith's Rule of Two. Ventress fought with twin red-bladed lightsabers, and clashed with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker many times. But her destiny would not lie with the Sith. After Dooku rejected her as his apprentice and tried to kill her, Ventress returned to her roots as a Nightsister, made a living as a bounty hunter, and – in the strangest twist of all – rediscovered the way of the light that she’d rejected long ago as a Jedi Padawan.
But now it says this: -
A former Jedi Padawan turned assassin, Asajj Ventress was trained in the ways of the dark side by Count Dooku. For many years, she yearned to be considered a true Sith, secretly acting as Dooku’s apprentice. During the time of the Clone Wars, Ventress fought for the Separatists, clashing with Jedi like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker with her twin red-bladed lightsabers. But after Dooku was ordered to dispose of Asajj and left her for dead, Ventress returned to her Nightsister clan to exact her revenge. In time, Ventress reinvented herself as a bounty hunter and reclaimed her identity, neither a Sith nor a Jedi
Note the subtle shift in emphasis from "assassin" to "former Jedi Padawan". Also interesting is the section that covers 'Dark Disiple' went from this: -
Ventress won renown as a bounty hunter, but her life changed when she teamed up with Quinlan Vos, a maverick Jedi who’d agreed to assassinate Count Dooku. Ventress joined Vos in hopes of destroying Dooku, but grew to love him – he helped her feel love and compassion again. Ventress taught Vos the ways of the dark side, but then rediscovered the light herself, giving her life to prevent Quinlan from being lost to evil.
To this: -
Ventress insisted on working alone until she found an unlikely partner on Pantora: the maverick Jedi Quinlan Vos, who had been sent by the Jedi Council to assassinate Count Dooku. Ventress joined Vos in hopes of destroying Dooku, but grew to love the Jedi. On Ventress’s homeworld of Dathomir, Vos participated in Nightsister rituals and opened himself to the powers of the dark side to complete his quest. But through their connection, Ventress found herself coping with feelings she’d thought she’d purged from herself: love, compassion and selflessness. Ultimately, Ventress sacrificed herself to save Quinlan’s life, taking the brunt of Dooku’s Force lightning during their final confrontation. But that wasn’t the end of Asajj’s story…
Nothing we didn't already know of course, but it's interesting that they've chosen to go into slightly more detail on the events of the novel adaptation, plus of course that stinger at the end.

Three very solid and damned entertaining episodes in a row. Season 3 kicks off to a very promising start.

And we have ourselves a season 3 poster. (Episode guides coming tomorrow, apparently.)
3BJ9mMe.jpg

No sign of Tech surviving (unless they're being very sneaky about it) and it seems like Omega will be replacing her rather cumbersome zygerrian energy bow for a more compact energy crossbow-pistol, that (aside from the "bow" part) looks like it's half-way between an EE-3 and an A-180 in terms of aesthetics.

Very confident start to the season. Not exactly a three-parter persee, but I can see why they decided to drop them all at once as that first episode all on it's own wouldn't have felt satisfying, and the first two together don't feel connected enough. It's the third one that ties them all together.

Random notes: -
'Confined'
  • I don't remember particularly lethal fauna being a feature of Wayland in the 'Heir' trilogy (though it has been a while.) Just that it had a native population which (so far) seems absent here. Feels more like they're combining Wayland with Myrkr a little bit, which honestly makes more sense; I can't see Palpatine tolerating the presence of natives on such a sensitive world, so if there were any, he'd have had them wiped out already. Also, the predator infested jungle is a logical security feature.
  • Good use or repetition for a lot of these shots to express the passage of time, and the sameness of the routine. The dripping tap, the hashmarks, Karr's mechanical, almost identical dialogue, the clock like sample analysis machine thing. The same tasks, over and over. Also a lot of overhead shots to highlight the sense of confinement. There's a lot of 'THX-1138' DNA in this place.
  • Still curious why the only the RC clones seem to have been spared the decommissioning. I mean obviously they're inherently more capable than CTs by design, but part of that was an increased capacity for independent thought and action. Perhaps these are just the RCs that responded well to "re-education", and possibly how Scorch ended up the only Delta left with the Empire (to say nothing of a promotion to Commander!) One hopes the other Deltas are in the wind, same as the Bad Batch, not in one of those specimen tanks . . .
  • Still a lot of questions about Emerie Karr. Why was sent away from Kamino? What was her purpose? She's obviously had the accelerated growth modification, so she's not a baseline clone like Boba & Omega. Were they seeing if producing a line of female clone troopers would extend the limited Fett genetic material even further? If so was she created after Omega, or even possibly from Omega? Why does she have a name, not a number or designation? Did Hemlock give it to her? What's her purpose to him now?
  • Nala Se is a tough one to figure out too. She's obviously attached to Omega (which is strange for a Kaminoan on it's own) and knows full well that there's more to Omega that anyone else ever knew. The question is; is this the possessive even jealous pride of a craftsperson in their work, or true maternal feelings? The show seems to want us to think it's the latter.
  • Hmm. "Specimens" plural; not just samples. I think there's more to this than just cloning Palpatine with his m-count preserved.
  • A sharpshooter with hand tremors? Is that I feel like that's going to be an ongoing story element for Crosshair.
  • 21 rotations worth of hash-marks by the end of the first act. 164, after the time jump. So five and a half months-ish total?
  • Not just longer hair, but seems like Omega's had a little growth spurt too.
  • Of course she named the runt "Batcher".
  • An act of compassion to an injured beast? If I know my storytelling, then I'm sure this will in no way come back into play later during their escape, nor will she become the newest resident of the Marauder! ;)
  • Speaking of acts of compassion; I wonder how Emerie's allowing Omega to keep Lula II will play out, and what it says about her arc. If there's one thing this show does better than any of the other animated shows, it's interesting characters, and Emerie is not breaking that trend so far!
'Paths Unknown'
  • Quasi-Gothic architecture in Star Wars? I don't know why, but that feels weird to me.
  • I know that voice. Isn't that that one bloke from Critical Role?
  • Neat to finally get a look at some Devaronian culture (whether or not this is actually Devaron itself.)
  • Wait, I know that voice too. Sounds like the Sith from 'Screecher's Reach' *checks credits* Yup, it's Anjelica Huston herself! Neat.
  • I don't know about anyone else, but I really wouldn't cope well having to stand on that thing. There's Jabba with his hidden trap-door, while here Durand is making anyone that seeks an audience under no illusion about the precariousness of their position.
  • Also digging the new design for a female Devaronian. Sort of, anyway. Most until now have either been hornless, or only had vestigial bumps . . . which I suppose could just be ground down. Perhaps only females of high status may grow them out? Which is interesting in and of itself since the male horns (stop sniggering, I can hear you) seem to be a symbol of pride and honour yet they're short and stubby like younger rams horns, while a matrons horns are far more impressive (I said stop it!) and seem to be modelled more after antelope horns.
  • Honestly I never thought this plot thread from season one would ever come back into play, but I'm glad it did. It's always nice to get more world-building in Star Wars, especially about the underworld side of things.
  • So I'm guessing this time AZI-3 was left on Pabu? I mean I would have thought it would be more useful to have a medic droid on the Marauder . . . but I guess it's crowded enough as it is. Plus I can see him grating on Wrecker & Hunter's patience.
  • Am I crazy, or does Wrecker seem . . . much more like a grown up? That's weird. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with him having complete sentences, and articulate thoughts.
  • Anyone else getting 'Alien' vibes from this planet? Yeah, I know it's a jungle so that should be 'Predator' vibes, but between the score and the almost gigeresque about the derelict vine covered base, there's something about it all that feels very deliberate.
  • Hmm, that's not Daniel Logan's voice. They recast the young clones? Oh it's the the kid from 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople'? Star Wars seems to be throwing a lot of work towards the Kiwis of late (not a complaint, just an observation on the legacy of the PT filming in Sydney.)
  • OK, THAT is Daniel Logan.
  • How much do we want to bet half the reason for the redesign of the adolescent clones is because Boba is going to show up this season?
  • Skittering tentacled face huggery things too? Well OK I think that cinches it!
  • Deke? Now there's a name (close enough anyway) with a looong Star Wars vintage.
  • So, Hemlock thought it was a good idea to splice together sarlaccs, rathtars, dianogas, ice spiders AND drengir? For what?! In what universe does this kind of of thing ever not become an uncontrollable horror show?
  • So many shots of Lula I in this episode, making sure Omega's absence is felt, just as her making of Lula II symbolises her missing her brothers.
'Shadow of Tantiss'
  • Creepy X-Clone shot which may or may not imply the true fate of Tech (I'm not convinced, personally. We'll see.)
  • Ah, so that's what's so special about Omega; she's the universal midichlorian doner/recipient Hemlock has been looking for? It's the only thing that makes sense at this point.
  • Was that be design or just a fluke of her creation/will of the force? (No, I don't think this makes her especially force sensitive, but I expect others will claim otherwise.)
  • Ah, so episode 1's blood sample ticking clock of repetition becomes this episode's blood sample ticking clock of doom? This is some very well planned out coordination and direction.
  • Pretty low-key so far as visits from the Emperor goes (only two red guards.) Clearly he's keeping this little trip as secret as possible, even from the inner circle.
  • I can't help but wonder how much of that vault's security is about keeping things *in* as it is keeping them *out*?
  • Mouse droids can never seem to catch a break.
  • Crosshair & Omega make a surprisingly entertaining escape duo! Her relentless optimism and his relentless pragmatism.
  • Ah, OK. Ancient Sith stuff. So was Mt. Tantiss the site of an ancient Sith Temple? Some Sith Lord's alchemical bio-lab? Or did he have all of this moved here from elsewhere? Probably the former since even the door and stairs look ancient. There must be something intrinsically important about this site . . . and it's probably whatever these specimens are.
  • I'm really starting to think Necromancer is about more than just Palpatine clones. What are these specimens? Preserved remains of ancient Sith Lords? Other members of Yoda's species? For a moment I wondered if he was trying to clone Anakin, but whatever they are they can't be clones of anything since replicating their original m-count is the whole point. Whatever they are they must be naturally strong in the force. Bodies of others like the Mortis Gods seems a little beyond his reach, and Jedi corpses seems too easy. So for now I'm going to stick with ancient Sith Lords. Maybe even all of them dating back to Bane?
  • Trying to splice together all those Sith Lords to serve as a new body could certainly explain why Snoke turned out like such a misshapen homunculus.
  • Whatever they are, there's a lot of them. Eighteen to twenty by my estimation, and that's assuming that the three large and four medium sized containers don't also house "specimens".
  • I'm assuming the "something big" moving in the background is the zillo beast? Seems dangerous keeping it that close to something so otherwise heavily protected.
  • So I'm guessing this beastie is the Dryax mentioned in the databank? Looks like a seriously jacked bear crossed with a pangolin. The red glowing eyes are a bit much . . . but it does rather support the notion of this world once being some demented Sith Lord's bio-weapon lab, and half the fauna is descended from whatever subjects got loose and survived.
  • Don't know why it still feels so shocking to see Omega in action like this; she's still a Fett after all. Maybe it's the switch to lethal rounds this time? She was aiming to miss, but still! Either way she feels waaay more competent that she has in the past. Shades of 'Padawan Lost' in terms of character growth.
  • Honestly; I'm a little surprised that the rest of the Batch didn't take part in the break-out! Guess they'll link back up next week on Pabu?

The first 3 episodes were very good. I have a feeling we'll see Rex and Echo next week.

Nolite te Bastardes Carborundorum, Omega. At least, that what was running through my head during the first episode.

Unsurprisingly, she and Crosshair escaped by the end of the premiere trilogy, which washed away any worry I had about them spending half the season focused on a "Must find Omega and/or Omega must escape" storyline. I'm very curious to see where things head in the remaining 12 episodes (why does this season have one less episode as the previous two?).

No sign of Tech surviving (unless they're being very sneaky about it)
Until the conclusion of the show, I'm desperately hanging onto that fool's hope, as a certain wise wizard once sort of said.

Good use or repetition for a lot of these shots to express the passage of time, and the sameness of the routine.
Yup, I loved all of that for the reasons you mentioned. THX 1138 DNA appeared in Andor so it's great to see it pop up here, too.

Still a lot of questions about Emerie Karr.
What struck out to me was how Emerie said she was sent away and then sometime later she began working with Hemlock. There's definitely a puzzle piece missing here.

Wait, I know that voice too. Sounds like the Sith from 'Screecher's Reach' *checks credits* Yup, it's Anjelica Huston herself! Neat.
Oh, damn, I didn't catch that. Doesn't help Disney+'s instance on jumping away from the credits as soon as possible, combined with my own issues with the streaming service this past month in getting shows and films to play on the first try (it's not a browser or internet issue either, it's really weird).

Mouse droids can never seem to catch a break.
I definitely felt a pang of sadness when Omega (understandably) kicked it out of the lift.

Crosshair & Omega make a surprisingly entertaining escape duo! Her relentless optimism and his relentless pragmatism.
Yup, I loved the hell out of that pairing. I'm hoping we get at least one full episode of just them alone on the run.

Trying to splice together all those Sith Lords to serve as a new body could certainly explain why Snoke turned out like such a misshapen homunculus.
Oh, I like that theory. Yet another way this show (and others) have gone a long way to repair and rebuild what the sequel trilogy wrought, just like how Clone Wars did with the prequel trilogy.

My current theory is the Bad Batch will do something that exposes the projects on Tantiss and then it all gets moved to Exegol.

The Emperor said there are factions in the empire that would not approve of what's happening on Tantiss, so I'm guessing Hemlock will become a scapegoat when it gets out.

That part at least made sense to me since we know Hemlock wasn't on Kamino, much less part of the cloning program until relatively recently. Plus IIRC it's been mentioned that he was all but exiled from the Republic's scientific community, so it's unclear exactly when Palpatine even recruited him.

I'd say there's an important distinction since the Clone Wars didn't "fix" the PT, it mostly just elaborated more on what George was actually thinking, but wouldn't fit into the movies.
The ST is a legitimate mess of half-baked ideas, and haphazardly assembled plots that does indeed need to be "fixed" AND elaborated on.

Project Necromancer gets a name drop, last (and first time) we heard that mentioned was in Mando Season 3.

Ah, that's what I was missing. But like you said, there are some definite lingering questions left to be explored.

That's a very fair point (although George didn't do himself any favors with atrocious dialogue in the prequel trilogy but that's another discussion).

Is that Palpatine on the poster? I wonder how everyone's "favorite" clone brat will defeat/embarrass/thwart him. Maybe a clone assisted atomic wedgie? Or has she moved on to more Home Alone style shenanigans? I could see Palpatine taking a paint can to the face (it would probably still leave him with more dignity then Rise of Skywalker did, to be fair).

Maybe this show ending means we might finally be done with the Clone wars/right before OT era, at least with TV/movie projects? I mean we're stuck with some of the characters for awhile yet, like Ahsoka, but at this point it feels like every second between the beginning of Phantom Menace and the beginning of Episode IV is chronicled in something, its a 30ish year period that has been used so much the well is just giving out sand at this point.
