Babylon 5

Anybody going to do a nostalgia watching of 'Sleeping in Light' on Tuesday to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of it airing?
Wow - 10 years?! How did that happen? Doesn't seem that long. Maybe since I've spent the last year or so marathoning the show with a friend and we're down to the final few episodes of the show - it still seems so fresh and relevant. 10 years. Wow.

Yeah, you thought you made a mistake once but that was a mistake, right? ;)

B5 is for people who can pay attention. Don't try to watch it if you're going to be other things at the same time. It's not that it's too convoluted and you'll lose track of anything, it's that they paid so much attention to detail in writing and making it that your attention will be richly rewarded in future episodes when you appreciate how things were set up earlier.

Ah...I envy you the first time...

PS: for those interested, Amazon.com has the Crusade DVD set on sale for $12.99 right now.

Yep, that one time was an error. And it WASN'T my fault, it was Lenny's.

And I agree. You really have to watch B5 closely. I had to run through the show twice, and on the second run-through, I discovered about 20 things I missed the first time through.

Ditto. Though admittedly when I watched through season one when it aired over here on sci-fi, it was the first time I'd seen most of those episodes since since they first aired at least 7 years before. Some I hadn't seen at all since originally it was usually on at 10pm on Channel 4 or something silly.
Still, I was shocked by just how much of the arc was hidden right there in plain sight.

Oh definitely! As I said in the DS9 thread, that first airing was special for me in a couple of ways. The next day was Thanksgiving Day. We watched the episode that Wed. night, and then inexplicably the next morning ... I woke up before the sun had come up, something I hadn't done in a VERY long time. Hadn't planned it. Didn't set the alarm for it. In truth, I'd rather have slept in. So....... I got up, fixed a cup of tea, and went out onto the deck to watch the sun come up.

Oh now you're going to make me cry 'roony!

I had a marathon viewing of the final five eps and by the time I had finished it was early morning. After that emotionally wringing night's viewing I could not sleep so I did the same thing. I went out into the backyard and watched the sun come up. It was a beautiful few minutes.

SiL will ALWAYS be a very special experience for me.

Well... I didn't watch it on Tuesday, but I did watch it early today. And a before I had some tea and watched the sunrise from our deck. It was about 25 deg F, so I didn't watch it for too long, but that cup of Irish breakfast tea helped quite a bit. ^_^

Then I settled down and took in "Sleeping In Light". And sat and thought. And remembered. And appreciated the series even more.

Some time after Dad passed away, mom told me they used to like sitting on the back deck watching the sun go down together. Of course I immediately thought of the finale of SiL. And of course now, every time I see SiL I get teary thinking of Mom and Dad on their back porch.

I'm sure jms has heard a few stories like that, but I doubt he gets tired of hearing them. It shows a nice connection with the episode, a sobering reminder to spend your time wisely.

Mine isn't exactly a sunrise but it's sunrise-related. Late in her life some good friends treated my mother to a ride in a hot air balloon and she *lovedl* it. Nowadays I live in an area where whole bouquets of hot air balloons are to be seen, often passing right overhead, shortly after sunrise. I always go out and watch them for as long as they're visible and say 'hi' to my mom.

"It changed the future. And it changed us.It showed us that we have to care for one another, because if we don't...who will? And that strength comes from unlikely places. Mostly, though, I think it gave us hope...that there can always be new beginnings, even for people like us."

Sounds hyperbolic but the show really has had a major effect on my life.

Very, very touching.

I can't go quite that far. The show did not change my life philosophically or physically, etc. However, it has helped me make some lifelong friends. It has created a thoroughly engrossing hobby with great stamina.

And it's supplied me with an almost endless supply of incredible quotes. :D

You should check out the Beyond Babylon 5 special again, the first person to talk about B5 is the Exisle's own Godeskian, he used to post on the old Slipstream BBS but I forget his old name on that BBS.

The thing that always saddens me when watching B5 is the somber realisation that we'll most likely never see anything quite like it again.

B5's always worth a chance if you've never seen it. Worst case scenario, you watch a few episodes and give up, not much time wasted. Best case scenario, you'll watch a few episodes, realise what it's all about and probably have found one of the greatest shows you're ever likely to see.

Can't say that it's had any sort of profound impact on my life, but as far as stories go, it's my favourite and I'll continue to appreciate it, and make time for it, for as long as I can. Effects, fashion and even dialogue can get old, but the central themes and the narrative of the show never will. If ever the word 'epic' deserved to be attributed to a show then B5 would be that show.

IMO.

By major impact I wasn't talking about anything really profound. Becoming, as Captain Jaclyn put it, a 'professional fan' by working with the Scripts Team has been really cool for the last couple of years, though. Like you, I've made some great friends and my fandom been a great hobby. Before B5 I wasn't likely to fly around the country to cons. One other thing, though...I'm probably much more consious since watching the show of things that I can do as an individual rather than just waiting for 'somebody' to do something.]/quote]

That, too. :)

Can I quote that?

:D

Add another quote and make it a gallon!
