Babylon 5

Didn't it use to be? I swear I remember seeing it come up under the sci-fi TV section on Netflix.
Yes, it was on Netflix streaming up to June 30, 2011 but it's only been on their DVD service since then. After that, it's only been available at a pay per episode basis.

It's pretty well known that JMS structured the show like a novel: Introduction, rising action, complication, climax and denouement. That would fit in with the tone you mentioned.
Indeed, and that describes the general tone and purpose of the five seasons pretty well. However I think the denouement or season 5 can be compared in many ways to that of LotR, but I will save the comments for some other time or thread as I don't want to spoil it for those in the process of watching the episodes for the first time. :)

Yeah, I looked at the episodes--I saw that episode back on the original run on HBO international when it was placed much later in the season. That was the first episode I liked though as I didn't see the pilot episode until much later. I would try starting with DNA Mad Scientist perhaps--but Farscape does have more than a few stinkers in any given season.l
Okay, I'll take a look for both. I assume those are the titles. :rommie:

I fell into a show hole and decided to give Babylon 5 a try. I know it was a popular show, but had never had a chance to see it. I bought season 1 and I've watched the pilot and first episode, and I gotta tell you, so far I'm not impressed. It seems kinda cheezy. Is it gonna get better? What season was the best?

I know I'm late to this party but I hope you stuck with it. It takes a little while to get used to the visuals and music, but it really is a great series that just gets better and better. Stay with season one as it ends up being very important to the story. The 1st 4 years are a well thought out long story arc. It's all important.

Season 5 is so so, but I fell in love with the series by then so I endured it.

Don't forget the 5 movies as well. Some better than others, but all worth at least one watch.

Enjoy!! I envy you, watching this outstanding series for the first time!

Indeed I did stick with it and have learned to love the show. I'm starting season 4 this week-end. It's a shame you can only see something the first time once. :)

As I'm sure Jan has already mentioned somewhere upthread, B5 is in some ways better the *second* time around as you catch all the little details and foreshadowings that flew right over your head on the first viewing. So you still have all that to look forward to. ;)

I probably did. I always tell people that I envy their first two times watching. And of course that second viewing should start immediately after the first. :)

We'll see. I want to like it.

I just meant don't feel like you're trying to force yourself to watch it--if you like it that's great and I will look forward to your thread on that show--if you don't like it then don't force yourself to watch it.

Just started my third or fourth trip around the B5 bases (all movies, seasons and specials on DVD, including Crusade) with my family.

I'm so glad they replaced the script-reading actress in Ops (Lt. Cmdr. Laurel Takashima) from "The Gathering." Tamlyn Tomita has a long list of credits on IMDB, so I assume she improved her craft after leaving B5.

I've watched the first 3 episodes of season 4. Again, I am struck by the organic way this tale unfolds. A mad Emperor, a First One, a Vorlon fleet... all new things thrown into the already complex mix. So many questions raised. Are the Sci cops in league with the Shadows, why was Garibaldy released? Will Londo make good on his promise to G'Kar? Did G'Kar really break? Of course these are all rhetorical questions. Please don't answer them!!

What an incredible mind it took to put this story together. So many details, so many threads. My hat is off to JMS. We now know why G'Kar wears an eye patch in Londos dreams of the future.

Tick-tock, tick-tock.

I've never had any problems with Tamlyn Tomita in any of the other shows I've seen her in.
