Babylon 5

I don't see anything creepy about his relationship with the singer. She wasn't his patient until she went to steal his credentials *after* they slept together.

If we're talking about Walkabout, he resigned as a Doctor. That shouldn't stop him from using his medical knowledge, however.

When my college roommate who introduced me to B5 said he thought Ivonova and Talia were secretly a couple toward the end, I thought it was strictly wish fulfillment.

Now that I'm seeing that weird response Ivonova gave when Sheridan asked her what she thought of Winters I'm not sure.

Also I'm noticing more and more things suspiciously similar to things DS9 did later. Bureau 13, not like that bears any resemblance to Section 31 or anything.

I'm sure we heard references to other medbays in show.
Yet Franklin always seemed to get lumbered with all the most difficult cases. He seemed to be a specialist in every branch of medicine, no matter what the species of alien. In reality, he would probably be a senior registrar surgeon in one branch for one species only. The same issue applies for most doctors on Star Trek - McCoy, Crusher, Pulaski, and Bashir. At least it's believable that the emergency medical hologram could be so flexible.

Yep, and we meet other full-fledged doctors on occasion. Most memorably Dr. Hobbs, but in early season 3 (the one with the brain-spine-worms) we saw him having a staff meeting with seven or eight other doctors who worked under him.

JMS confirmed that Talia was definitely reaching over the bed for Ivanova so I'd say that they had definitely hooked up at least the one time.

As I recall there was a game that had a Bureau 13 so that was one reason why it was dropped.

Interesting.

Minor cultural observation here, when two fictional women who are ostensibly straight suddenly become physically interested in each other, nobody questions it, but if the same thing happened with two fictional men you'd probably get major backlash. Even though most statistics show a greater percentage of homosexuality among men.

I can think of several cases in fiction across several media where women portrayed to be straight then became gay and zero cases of the same for men. I wonder if part of the reason is the wish fulfillment of male writers.

Maybe, also you could argue there's no reason to have something separate from Psi Corps that is connected to Psi Corps and is doing the same thing Psi Corps is doing.

Perhaps. But recall that, though not a 'real' relationship, Franklin and Marcus were posed as a couple later on in the show. JMS has said that he always tried to make sure that there were same sex couples in Zocalo and crowd scenes even if there weren't public displays of affection. I think the point was that by then it simply wasn't any big deal.

And though we'd seen a male former lover of Ivanova's, I think it's our assumption that she was portrayed as being straight. For all we know, JMS planned that all along.

It's been years since I watched the episode, but didn't Ivanova specifically mention that Talia wasn't in bed when she woke up? If that's not explicit confirmation that they were sleeping together I'm not sure what is. Honestly, I don't think I ever questioned it.

And as for the thing with Marcus and Franklin, I tend to agree that they way they played it, the joke wasn't that they were both men, but that they had to pose as a married couple at all. I mean if it was even a little unusual for two newlywed gentlemen to visit Mars on their honeymoon it wouldn't make for a terribly effective cover story, yes?

Engadget has a good article on why Babylon 5 looks so terrible. It's mostly (all?) things those who've into B5 long enough know, and, as usual, the TL;DR is: "JMS is willing to help out, but Warner Brothers doesn't want to spend any money or make any effort."
JMS and Neil Gaiman think that maybe we should get louder about asking:

(disclosure: I'm the founder of the #FreeBabylon5 movement from a couple of years ago so this seems right up my alley.)

Very good article, covers almost all the important points. The only thing I don't see mentioned is that you can still buy the original 4:3 broadcast versions on vudu.com. They're showing their age, but it's still my preferred way to watch the show. Wish they'd at least put these on Amazon. Netflix used them for awhile.

I just saw this Twitter exchange on Facebook...courtesy of FreeBabylon5. I went straight to Twitter and added my voice to chorus of demanding fans for better versions.

Has anyone noticed just how bad the show looks on "Amazon Prime?" I was dissapointed. They look worst than the DVD's.

Check the recent posts above yours, Jayson, I posted an article about this issue.

I also retweeted, with a comment, that exchange between Neil Gaiman and JMS, having also seen the FreeBabylon5 post on Facebook moments before checking this board.

JMS gave a couple more Twitter 'addresses' to tweet to:
J. Michael Straczynski‏Verified account @straczynski
J. Michael Straczynski Retweeted Henry Starling

The right places to tweet support for striking new copies off the Babylon 5 film masters for Amazon would be @primevideo, @WarnerBrosEnt, @warnerbrostv and @WarnerHomeVideo

Characters are discussing baseball.

Shouldn't they be discussing basketball and soccer? At this rate baseball may not last to 2050, much less 2250.

I'm currently at the episode where they replace Delenn in the Gray Council with Neroon. For some reason I thought that happened much later, this means the council was in this state for two full seasons?

Why did they think giving a 5-2-2 advantage to the Worker caste was a solution to this? Seems like giving any group an unbalanced majority is equally bad, so everyone's okay with this because they were the least combative caste in the last couple years?

Baseball will outlive basketball, just look at Star Trek. Sure Baseball ended on Star Trek, but no one even brought up the awful soccer/football or basketball.

Unless somebody magically restores the human attention span to 1950s levels, or they change the rules to Futurama extremes, that is unlikely.

I guess all these shows were written in the steroid era when everybody was giddy about home run records and half the fans hadn't figured out the reason yet.

In addition to all the issues mentioned above, these versions are very bad encodes from the early days of Amazon streaming. Low bitrate and crushed blacks (too dark). So even other DVD-sourced versions (Google play, Go90 before it was removed) look better.
