Babylon 5 - I'm finally going to do it

Exogenesis

I'm thinking this was the episode to really introduce Marcus. Yeah we saw him in action a few times in the premiere episode (of course) and then in Voices of Authority, but that was really on business. It was nice to see a different side to him (Actually on the station) and I really like him. Pretty good add on to the cast this season. As for the plot, not too bad but a question I had was why go through the trouble of locking up Cole and Franklin instead of coming out and asking. Yeah they want to keep their knowledge secret, but the Vindrizi were on a peaceful mission it seemed like. The mission was sound, but I didn't get holding Cole and Franklin hostage. I guess the only good it did was see Marcus in action and it was great but still.

As for the Corwin plot, it was nice seeing a different side to him. Given the subtle hints we've gotten over the season so far, I wonder what role he will play if they ever do really bring out the conspiracy of Clark. Loved the scene at the end with Marcus, Ivanova and the roses. :guffaw:

Don't forget! Watch the next three episodes uninterrupted, without any distractions, and in a "mood" setting.

You'll thank me later.

What do you mean mood setting? I was planning to see them all tonight, which is kind of why on this beautiful day I was watching episode 7.

Season 3 is the best sequence/song by a long, long mile. The others don't even come close. I remember particularly disliking 1 and 5. I don't remember 2... I recall 4 being just alright.

I just mean someplace quiet and comfortable (like your favorite chair!). You probably do this anyway, it's just all three episodes can get a bit emotional and it's nice to let yourself really get into it. So, you know, "moody".

Messages From Earth

Given I was told not to interrupt this arc, the reviews for these first two episodes might be shorter. Suffice it to say, I enjoyed the hell out of that. Earth working with the Shadows? Who knew. Also loved the piloting scenes on the White Star in the atmosphere (How many ways does it take to take down a shadow ship this season? So far, 2, but it ain't over yet) and the stuff with Sheridan and Delenn talking about the rain to help sleep was great as well.

I will say one other thing, since we've been talking about the theme music today. I never talk about closing credits, but when Earth was declared under Martial Law and then you had the S3 theme to close the episode out, I think it was that moment that hit me. This is a perfect theme for the season.

Earth working with the Shadows? Who knew.
Didn't they already reveal that in "Voices of Authority"? Clark talking on the phone with Morden about killing Santiago? And also, didn't they show Morden meeting with the PsiCorps in "Matters of Honor"?

Yeah, but it was still shocking anyway. Actually now that you bring that up I look on that comment and laugh as if I did forget. :)

Hyperspace05, Yeah I did see Majel Barrett. That was such a different role than what I've seen it was almost a bit unnerving.

Anyway:

Point of No Return & Severed Dreams

Well, I got really into this whole thing so I'm going to talk about the overall story.

Things sure went to hell didn't they. It's one thing where fighting happens around the station but it's the alien worlds and the station is kind of on the sidelines. These two episodes brought everything a whole hell of a lot closer to home and all I can say is wow. From earth declaring martial law, to Nightwatch taking over it was like can't things get any worse than this. Garibaldi pretty much said it all in his scene with the Nightwatch official. And then the trick Sheridan pulled on them was awesome. Order coming from the political office, which has no jurisdiction on security. Love the Captain.

Anyway, as for Severed Dreams, So that's where the Independence Day inspired speech came from. I've only seen it on Youtube, but it was a great speech. It's even all that more cool once you get it in context. Babylon 5 is an independent state, that pretty much changes everything. As for the fight, how was the budget for B5 again? I ask because that fight sequence was amazing. Who knows what kind of scene it would have been with a bigger budget, but for what they had, well done. Loved seeing the Minbari showing up, and Delenn is officially bad ass. "Only one Human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else!" Awesome quote.

I've been debating which episode I liked better, Severed Dreams or The Long, Twilight Struggle. Both episodes were outstanding, epic even, but I was wondering where in Severed Dreams was the emotional impact. Where were the scenes that could be compared to Londo standing over Narn watching the planet being destroyed, or the scene in the council chamber. I found those scenes at the end, and well it pushed SD over the top for me. One was seeing all the dead in the Brown area, as well as Garibaldi stuggling to stand. The next scene was the one that definitely put it over the top. Sheridan standing under the Zigalo sign as the people below him cheer and then we cut to the Night Watch poster. I nearly choked up during that scene. The Long, Twilight Struggle has moved down to number 2, and I didn't think that would have been possible.

I think LTS will be about your No. 4 or No. 5 when all is said and done.

Yup. It's long been my opinion the Dreams is one of two or three all-time best episodes of science fiction television.

As I said a few a posts up, it's nearly perfect. The only blemishes really are a couple of the jokes in the teaser kind of misfired. The extra they had "talking" (but not) to Londo during the evacuation sequence always seems awkward to me. His facial expressions are just terrible. But, I guess I have to find SOMETHING to complain about.

The other small thing is Major Ryan's chair is REALLY cheesy. I always get a laugh out of it. I guess they spent all the money on the effects.

And I'm with you, Delenn's quote at the end is my favorite from the entire series. No, it's not as wise as some of G'Kar's stuff or as jovial and insightful as Londo', it's just 100% bad ass! And given the source just makes it all the more awesome. I actually had it as my sig for a long time when way back when I first joined the BBS.

Ceremonies of Light and Dark

One could almost say this episode serves as kind of an epiloge to the previous three. Minbari have to pay for their actions, and the main four (Sheridan, Franklin, Ivanova, and Garibaldi) are kind of reborn at the end. Very nice episode, and hopefully this is the last time we get Night Watch for a while. I know they're not totally gone from the story, but through all this, there are still the Shadows out there, and I was actually glad they addressed the Centauri situation. With everything that's been going on lately, this is a good episode to serve as a reminder that there is a much bigger picture out there. For that, I enjoyed it. Not anything like the previous three, but how could it. I will say though, so that's where the black uniforms came from. I remember they had switched uniforms in the series but know I know when and the circumstances of that. My question is now, what about those on the command deck. Are they getting the black too or are they a reminder of what the Earth Alliance was before the civil war broke out.

One other thing, did one of the production crew forget a "Wet Floor" marker while filming. You know, one of those yellow things you put on the floor. It sure looked like it wasn't supposed to be there but it was still unintentionally funny.

"Severed Dreams" (according to the P5 ratings) is the overall #1 rated episode of the show by fans.

Personally, though, I'm not as enthusiastic about it as almost everyone else is, although I still think it is a top 10 overall episode. It just barely enters the top ten list for me. I rate "The Long, Twilight Struggle" higher as well, at #3 or #4. The rest is episodes yet to come. :)

But even though you may eventually rate it #1, that does not mean it is all downhill from here. Far from it - But the overall quality is much higher. Most (myself in included) would argue that Mid-Season 3 through to the end of season 4 is the extended high point of the show. This does not mean Season 5 is crap :) but S5 starts off very slow and ends very strong.

Alright, that's it, dammit! :p This thread has forced me to begin rewatching B5 again even though I just watched it last summer! I bought the DVDs after I watched it so now I finally have the excuse to crack open those DVDs and see it on DVD quality instead of SLP tapes that have been played a hundred times. Also, commentaries! Of course... it also helps I don't have a job... :p

My favorite B5 intros are Season 3 and of course Season 5.

^This.

I love well-done sturm and drang, and the S3 theme is that in spades! And the S5 theme is simply a gorgeous composition.

Oddly enough, I think the S2 theme is the weakest, with Sheridan doing the rehashed Sinclair monolog.

Severed Dreams trivia: Jerry Doyle broke his wrist during the fight scene. You can see it dangling oddly when Zack is helping him up. What a trooper.

When Hiroshi went kamikaze, that is the only moment in TV history that made me actually leap up out of my chair and cheer. (I think my exact quote was "Ram it down their throats, baby!!" )

My one and only complaint about SD is that I thought the Earth Force ships turned tail and ran WAY too quickly after Delenn showed up. I'd expect a bit more shouting/negotiating back and forth, before any good task force captain would retreat.

Well, maybe the Earthforce fleet commander was also a Minbari war veteran. In that case he would know that resistance is indeed futile.

Earth won only a single engagement during the war... and this was because Sheridan managed to outthink them by luring them into a trap.
