In the script books jms mentions that originally Lyta and Ivanova were going to be in a relationship before he created the character of Talia. Once Talia was in, that relationship was shifted to her. When he had to take Talia out and bring Lyta back in, he thought it would be a bit of a jump to have Ivanova have a relationship with Lyta too. Which brings me to this -- if Lyta had stayed from the beginning, and Lyta & Ivanova became lovers, and then Byron showed up -- there was perhaps a plan for a triangle here. I know jms now says Lyta would just be watching that relationship from the sidelines, but he does say that both Lyta and Ivanova were going to part of the telepath group; and it was after Lyta came back into the show that he decided not to go to the Ivanova same-sex relationship thing again. I have a feeling that "specific plans in this area [from the writer's bible]" for Lyta did mean an eventual lovers triangle between the three of them (Byron, Lyta, Ivanova) to bring the telepath arc together. A 3-way relationship certainly would have been something not seen in a lot of TV shows!
