Axanar?

Axanar is a title that I believe has been made into one of the web Trek shows but what exactly is it? Most of what we know about it comes from Mirror,Mirror is that right or am I on the wrong track? Plus how did it make brothers of Kirk and Spock?

Of course, Garth was involved think I remember a bit although I haven't seen Whom Gods Destroy very often! The article claims it was the klingons or a struggle to hold the Federation together! Thanks for that, Corporal, much appreciated!

I'm basing my knowledge on the fan film, but from what I've seen, the creative team behind that has really done their homework:

The Battle of Axanar was the culmination of the "Four Years War", the war between the Federation and the Klingons that led to the establishment of the Neutral Zone. Captain Kelvar Garth (A.K.A. Garth of Izar) led the Federation fleet in that battle.

The idea of the Four Year War against the Klingon Empire, coined by the role-playing company FASA, is somewhat contradictory: in "Errand of Mercy", it appears that Kirk has never participated in open war with the Klingons, yet in "Whom Gods Destroy" it seems that the only time Kirk could have been a mighty warrior like Garth suggests is back during the very same conflicts that Garth fought.

Those appearances and suggestions can be interpreted whichever way, though, and if the result is a few more hours of quality entertainment, all the better.

Kirk didn't partake in the Battle of Axanar, himself, though he did read about it in the academy, and participated in a peace mission there (probably in a very small role, since he was still a cadet).

From the transcript at Chakoteya.net:

KIRK: I agree there was a time when war was necessary, and you were our greatest warrior. I studied your victory at Axanar when I was a cadet. In fact it's still required reading at the Academy.
GARTH: As well it should be.
KIRK: Very well. But my first visit to Axanar was as a new fledged cadet on a peace mission.
