A Canadian group is restoring a Hawker Typhoon to airworthy condition and recently received a major part needed for the project.

They got their hands on a the Napier Sabre engine (only 1 of of about 40 left in the world) which now has to be restored. In order to get the Napier (relatively few were built because of the jet engine making it's mark) they traded a Merlin engine which took them 3 years to obtain and then restore. The article mentions that about 3300 Sabre were built, there were 150,000 Merlins built by the time production ended in 1950.

Typhoons are rarer than their engines. According to the wiki entry, there is only complete air-frame (originally at the Smithsonian, now in the U.K) and 5 partially complete air-frame. The one in B.C and one other are long term projects to make airworthy.

People might be surprised how far they actually date back - concept dates back to very early part of the 20th century, first workable design came in the 1930, first recorded ejection was by a German pilot in the middle of WWII.

my in-laws have move to the home of the Canadian air force's 8 Wing and from where they're living now they get a good view of the C-130s and C-17s as they do training flights.

the CC-150 Polaris that's used as a VIP transport is also stationed here.
