AVG 8.0

Has anyone here ever used AVG anti-virus? I used to use it, and loved it. However, when they upgraded to version 8 I was having problems. The automatic scanner would keep running all the time, and I couldn't figure out how to stop it so I could just run my own scans. Then on top of it, the software was draining my computer resources. I don't even have a gig of ram yet (only 768 megs :wtf:) and I had to remove AVG and use a different program. I now have Comodo anti-virus, which is slick and doesn't use up a lot of my resources. I used to use AVG 7.5, and that program was decent too, but the new version 8 just sucks at least on my system. I know I need more RAM on my system, but my PC is about 4 years old or so and I'm trying to save up for a new PC instead.

Use it.

Kinda luv it.

Sure, it tends to be very demanding of the system, but what kind of software isn't these days?

I think (hope, really) it is doing fine on my system; at least I haven't (knock on forehead (as I don't have anything else readily available)) had any virus related problems.

I've set it to run at a time when I've usually just gone to bed, so I never really notice just how long it takes to scan my PC. I do however feel that it takes a few more seconds to scan incoming mails than previous versions did.

I did that, too. But then for some reason my hard drive kept running all the time so I don't know if it didn't delete some virus I had or if the program itself kept running in the background all the time to keep my system from acting up. What it would do is slow my computer down to the point where it would freeze up. I tried to see if it was any other program I had running that was causing a problem, even did a virus check and defragmentation but nothing seemed to help. So I decided to unstill AVG and everything seems to be peachy king now. I have 20 less resorces running in the back ground and I haven't seen my PC run this smoothly in awhile. AVG 7.5 was great for me, but this new version just well... didn't go so well.

Just open of the program and go to the computer scanner tab. There are several options for changing the type, number, and how frequently the scans are run. I don't think you can turn them off completely, but you can set them to monthly.

Sure, if you shoot the guard-dog, no barking is going to keep you up all night long - :rommie:

Are you sure you don't have any other forms of malware that might influence your virus-scanner?

It's quite possible that I did, I'm not sure. I'm using Comodo antivirus now and it seems to be working great for my system. I haven't seen my computer run this smoothly in a long time. I ran several different programs to see if I had any malware and Comodo found a couple of programs, but AVG acted up still so I just decided to delete AVG altogether.

I used to use AVG Free but after losing two hard drives to...something, I decided to go with a pay service.

Cool, then! - I'm just not quite ready to dump AVG yet :rommie:

But if you, indeed, have found an antivir that needs a lot less system-resources than AVG, I am looking forward to trying that out on my new 'notepad' (once I actually get one).

I had the same problem. I got a new system this week and haven't noticed the scanner constantly running. But you are not alone.

AVG 8 was more trouble than it was worth--I had similar problems that others described here.

I switched to Avira AntiVir which now works fine for me once I killed that nag screen that pops up roughly every 24 hours or so.

Anti-Vir is the best choice now. AVG dropped the ball with 8. It consumes almost as many resources as McAfee and Norton, and is more bloated shinyware with a huge footprint.

As people have mentioned here at the board before, AVG is the best free anti virus program you can get. I've used it for years now, but not this new version. Maybe remove that one and re-download the previous version. No need to upgrade really.

I also recommend Ad-aware (from Lavasoft), which is also free and used to be a great spyware remover. LAtely though it's been getting on a "can't delete this or that without a restarting the computer" shit, which is annnoying because it used to delete that shit without restarting, which leads me to believe that might be getting kickbacks from people who make certain spyware cookies. Along those lines I used to recommened Spybot: Search & Destroy, but the last dozen times I ran it, it found nothing, while Ad-aware and Spy Sweeper did. I guess S:S&D completely sold out.

Yeah, Ad-Aware is getting better with their detection again (after falling off for a while), but their resource demands are entirely unreasonable. Honestly, it's easier just to run CCleaner or CleanUp! than it is to have Ad-Aware running.

As well as Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D that others have mentioned,I'd try Superantispyware too.
http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

I know people have had issues with Ad-Aware recently (On one of our machines, it just stops dead unless running in safe mode. On the other, it's fine)

We tend to run all three fairly regularly:)

It's better with the resource hogging now than it was when 8 first came out. The one that my work recommended (Trend Micro) was an absolute pig. AVG is a paper thin client compared to that bloated piece of...well...enough ranting ;)

I had trouble with AVG 8 (which still isn't right by all accounts), so I simply rolled back to 7.5 - that still works fine for me.

Trend Micro is bad, but not nearly as bad as Norton.

I too have replaced AVG with Avira. I'm loving Avira more and more; it's much easier to use and is far less demanding on the system.
