Avery Brooks; open up!

I really liked DS9, it was my favorite of the BERMAN treks. And Avery Brooks took a lot of cheap shots at the start, and even through-out the entire run. I think he did a great job. I admit he started off a bit rocky, and that some don't like his acting style..well I did...

And other than a couple scatter shot CONVENTION spots, you hardly ever hear from this guy. And when you do its just a few words about DS9 and thats it.

I would love to see WILLIAM SHATNER have AVERY BROOKS on the new Shatner show. He is going to have Nimoy, big deal. And there are rumors Patrick will appear..again..BIG DEAL. I want to hear from the silent captain...Benjamin Sisko.

So come on Avery!!!..open up...

Brooks has retired from acting, and is probably content to stay that way. I doubt he wants to put up with the rigors of a tv schedule again.

At any rate, I'll take Brooks' quiet withdrawl over the former Trek actors who complain about their time on Star Trek, even though it was their only brush with success. Blalok and Beltran come to mind, immediately.

Well, I disagree. He doesn't have to talk about any of the backstage antics, and there were some according to others. I just want to know his opinions on certain episodes. Or how he thought Sisko evolved. I think he can do it along those lines with out being political..

I've seen him at a couple of conventions and he seemed open enough to me.

I saw him in Pasadena..and he was great. But at first he seemed shy and it took Mulgrew and Shatner to bring him out of it...so seeing him with Shatner again would be great..especially since they both have that same acting manor that drive some fans batty..but I love

Brooks hasn't retired from acting. He's very active on stage. I had the opportunity to see him in Tamburlaine in Washington, DC last fall and he was fantastic.

But, lacking an agent, and much interest, he's not very active as a film or television actor these days. He occasionally does voice overs, but that's about it.

Wow, that must have been cool..tell us more. How did he do? What was the crowd reaction to his performance?

Brooks dissed DS9 really bad on the DVD extras, saying he's lucky to have survived it, and he only stayed on because he wanted to set a good example to his son for keeping his word etc. etc.

It would be nice if Paramount would release the full-length interviews of those; they are 1.5 hours long according to some of the showrunners who were also interviewed in the same way. The DVD extras only has tiny little tidbits of those interviews, and even those are mostly just DS9 footage with a few seconds of interview footage interspersed with it. :scream:

I bet Brooks would have opened up even moreso during that interview; especially if his 'best' comments about DS9 were the few minutes worth that actually made it into the extras where he is ravaging it.:guffaw:

First of all, I've seen Avery Brooks at a convention, and I thought he was very nice and quite open with the fans. He really had a good time, and told us so.

That said, Avery Brooks has never been lacking for work and he is not one of those Trek actors who cling to Star Trek like a toddler clings to a blankie because they don't have anything else on their resume worth having.

Brooks was successful before Star Trek, and he has been successful since. Perhaps not in the way YOU think he should have been successful (more Trek or scifi related projects seem to be a favorite measurement of 'success' around here), but certainly by the standards with which he himself measures success.

So he doesn't go to every Star Trek convention, eager to cash in on Sisko at every possible opportunity. Big deal. I respect him for that - certainly more than I respect Marina Sirtus, who, despite the fact that she's such a terrible actress that she can't get a gig which doesn't have 'Star Trek' in the name, bashes DS9 at every opportunity.

I respect Avery Brooks. Star Trek was a job, and he was done with the job years ago. He doesn't need a bunch of nerd-love at conventions to bolster his ego...nor his bank account.

Good for him!

I am not saying thats what he needs to do, since most fans don't get to go to conventions. But I think, for the history of Star Trek as a production, he should go on the record with some kind of video interview. You may disagree, and he certainly does, and thats cool. But I, a regular fan, think even Avery needs to let us know more about his Star Trek involvement...IMO!

Not to derail the thread, but when has Marina ever bashed DS9? I've never heard that before.

Yeah, she's made some cracks about it. I think she's one of those tiresome 'ds9 isnt star track becuase teh space stashun doesn't go nowear!" types.

It doesn't help that it was the only modern Star Trek show that never contributed to her bank account. :shifty:

Considering his age, the man was in great shape. Jumping and running everywhere on stage. Hell, I'm 21, and he was in better shape than I am now!

He got a great ovation at the end of the show. He really was powerful from beginning to end, and, especially considering the length of the play, he managed to keep an extraordinary level of energy throughout (as Tamburlaine he's basically in every scene of the play).

I wish I had more connected thoughts, but it was a year ago, and I'm not a theatrical critic in any way, shape, or form. Brooks was great, though.

I also had the pleasure seeing him at a convention 2-3 years previous where he was also cordial with fans. He sang for a brief time, and I can still remember that his voice was tremendous. I read that he finally finished his long awaited album. Has it been released?

...Such as?

Co-creating and executive producing DS9.

Brooks is not retired from acting. In fact, he's playing Willie Loman in an all-African American production of Death of a Salesman in Cleveland right now.

Have any of the "modern" Trek actors written about their time in the Trek universe? It might be interesting to hear some first-hand accounts from the people involved, with the understanding that all the stories would have to be taken at face value.
