Re: AVENGERS - movie Discussion, News, Interviews, Pics till release 2

maybe SHIELD feel that Famous Tony Stark is better to fit the Avengers than some gun-dripping US Air Force colonel, selling the team to the world.

I'd hope that in this film, SHIELD is most concerned above all about saving the world from an extraterrestrial threat, even to the exclusion of the team's public image. But I can't really understand what you mean, because I have no idea what "gun-dripping" means in this context.

Gun dripping would be an over abundance of guns. So many that they are dripping off of him. At least that's how I read it.

OK. That might make sense in the context of War Machine, but I don't recall it applying to Lt. Col. Rhodes himself.

I don't know if it'll be mentioned in the movie, but background material says that originally they were going to put the Abomination in the Avengers but Fury got them to go for Hulk instead.

That bit is stated in one of the Coulson short films, The Consultant, in which the "World Security Council" wants the Abomination exonarated and put on the team, and SHIELD is ordered to negotiate with General Ross to make it happen.

Coulson and Agent Sitwell decided to sabotage the deal by sending Stark to irritate Ross (the final scene from Inc. Hulk).

Re: AVENGERS - movie Discussion, News, Interviews, Pics till release 2

I actually originally posted about this in the Marvel Comics thread, but I think that it's more relevant here after all. I downloaded the free 10-page first issue of "Fury's Big Week", an Avengers movie prequel that attempts to tie threads from the various movies into a single narrative before the movie.

It actually begins during the climactic scene of Captain America: The First Avenger (although I'm not sure if the 1943 date is correct), we see Cap fighting the Hydra agents on the Valkyrie, and then follows the progress of one of the Hydra agents... all of the way to the ground.

In the present day, we find a team of SHIELD agents, including Fury and Coulson, recovering the body and the Red Skull's bomb/plane. It would seem that Fury is actively searching for Steve Rogers, and actually expects him to be recoverable*. The task is interrupted ht a communication from the World Security Council, who order Fury to pack it all up and return to headquarters.

Once home, the WSC informs Fury of a change in priorities-- He is to stop wasting time and resources on "wasteful" projects like finding Rogers (who the WSC believes would be irrelevant in the modern day), coddling Stark (when all he should be doing is securing Stark's tech), and surveillance of Banner (who is too big of a question mark). Instead he is to focus his time and efforts on re-energizing the tesseract.

Fury doesn't take too well to the directive, and tells Coulson to just keep doing what he has been doing all along, just do it secretly, and hope that it doesn't blow up in their faces.

This is to be the first of eight parts, with the rest of the chapters be cost 99 cents each. The first chapter was 10 pages, and I would assume the rest to be the same. In the end, that works out to be less than $7 for an 80-page comic.

*This makes little sense to me unless Fury somehow knew that the Serum would preserve Rogers. I could buy it if he were trying to retrieve the serum from Rogers corpse, but the scene with the WSC pretty clearly states that Fury expected Rogers himself to be relevant to his goals.

I DLed it from Comixology the other day, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

DC should be going their own route in crafting their film universe, not copying Marvel's template. "Green Lantern" was supposed to be the launching point in a new era for DC Ent's Film division and we know how that went. They have to sit down, plan, stop promoting characters they want to see and promote, and start promoting characters that the fans want to see which is the Justice League. I'm not saying build up to a Justice League film, I'm saying concentrate on introducing your characters and build your universe first. DC seems to have a much harder time in doing this than Marvel has had.

Um...I'm pretty darn sure fans wanted to see Green Lantern. They just would have preferred the movie not be a steaming pile of crap.
I agree with both of you, the point I was making is DC needs to get off of its as and get moving. I would argue that Marvel has consistently pumping out the hits since X-Men in 2000. Marvel as a studio has become very strong since IronMan. Obviously Batman has been very successful and the new Superman looks promising, but they have really screwed the pooch over past decade.

For Superman he's on his second attempt. Who knows what would have happened if "Superman Returns" had a sequel.

There's so much riding on "Man of Steel" being successful after "Superman Returns" and also Green Lantern's disappointing box office.

I still wouldn't have minded a sequel to "Returns", but that ship has sailed. I'm just glad there is a Superman movie coming out. I'm also glad that Marvel seems to have it together and a respect for the fans.

Cool, but I'm much more excited about Lord of the Rings Legos. :D

Re: AVENGERS - movie Discussion, News, Interviews, Pics till release 2

Heck you can try to squeeze "Middle Earth" into the 9 realms somewhere.

Well, Midgard can be translated as "Middle Earth", which would make it our world. So look out for Orcs, Hobbits and Balrogs!

Re: AVENGERS - movie Discussion, News, Interviews, Pics till release 2

Middle-earth was our world (in a fictional context, of course), just in the distant past before recorded history. ;)
