Deadline Hollywood has learned that the sidekick role is Maria Hill and that Cobie Smulders is expected to get the part (the deal could be finalized this weekend).

Maria Hill makes more sense than Janet or even Carol - her Ultimate role not withstanding.

Maria Hill as Fury's sidekick makes sense, as that's essentially the role she plays in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Which I've always thought of as primer for the younger generation. The Generation that got the 90s Avengers cartoon version may not even remember it due to it's brevity.

ComicBookResources has posted a new casting rumor about another female casting for The Avengers.
Their unnamed source at Marvel is saying that Ms.Marvel is going to be in the movie and the lead contender is Yvonne Strahovski of Chuck fame.
CBR is known to run with nearly anything so while the articel even cautions "take with a grain of salt" I'm thinking maybe the whole shaker in this case.
Ms.Marvel has always been an ideal choice due to her military background as a character before becoming a super heroine. I'd almost be willing to belive that Carol Danvers might have a small type cameo but not that Ms.Marvel will appear, at least not in the first movie.

Whedon's stated that Black Widow's the only female Avenger, so i'd say Ms. Marvel's not happening.
Carol Danvers on the other hand, could well appear in some small role.

Yeah it's a done deal now. Like I said yesterday it probably was going to be finalized this week, didn't think it'd be this soon though. I think since they've used Ultimate Fury they could easily use Ultimate Carol Danvers (who was Fury's second and now is Shield Director) and introduce her as a Shield agent with a limited role that could be built up in future movies and over other films? I dunno. Carol has become one of my favorite Avengers characters over the years so I'd like to see her. Interesting though now the movie has two women that Tony has been romantically linked to over the years in Tasha and Maria. It'd be funny if Carol was signed. Do we know if Agent Jimmy Woo is going to be part of this? He's one of my favorite Shield agents too that Bendis has used in some event books and in Ultimate Spider-Man. I'm very excited for this movie.

Marvel studios on the effort to make sure AVENGERS feels like it's on thing.
Glad to hear they are structuring this in such a way that one could feel like it's still a "ground level" film if it's the first time your sampling the MCU.

I think they made an incredibly smart decision by having Whedon direct and write this movie. He knows how to ground characters and balance action/adventure with character development. It will no doubt be a challenge for him, this being his first major blockbuster film (yes Serenity was his first sci-fi/action film but this is beyond that in scope). I'm very pleased with the way this film is coming together.

Jimmy Woo and some of the other agents may get small roles or may have to wait for the Black Widow solo movie or even the Fury-centric SHIELD movie for their day in the sun.
