TORONTO – The Avengers set the biggest opening weekend box office record in Canada. The Marvel blockbuster opened with $15.5 million in ticket receipts, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Canada reported Monday.
That broke the previous record Canadian opener of $12.9 million posted last year by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
Disney didn't break out its Canadian screen count for the opening weekend north of the border.
Smashing the Canadian record came as the Disney and Marvel superhero movie pulled in $207.1 million at the domestic box office, also the biggest debut ever for North America.

I like the thought you've put into the blueprint for a new solo Hulk film spinning out of Avengers!!
The Hulk movie is still the only one of the series I haven't seen, but Ruffalo did an amazing job in this movie. I'm not a big fan of Norton and that's largely why I avoided that film, anyone care to let me know if it's really worth watching compared to the others?
I do think people are overrating it just a tad, I think a year from now on DVD, it's not going to feel quite as substantial. I think it's telling that people have to qualify their praise by referring to it as a "comic book movie". That's always been the problem, the sort of lightweight expectations and delivery of Marvel movies. IM2, Thor, and Captain America are all fun entertaining movies, that I kind of forgot about 5 minutes after they were over. Avengers bucks the trend somewhat by actually feeling a little weighty, but the story is kinda bleh. It's so funny and has that newness of seeing several heroes onscreen together than it's still electrifying.
Solid flick.
The superhero tentpole, scoring the top opening of all time in North America, outpaces Sunday's projected $200.3 million bow; worldwide, the film has earned $654.5 million, the top gross of 2012.
The news keeps getting better for Marvel Studios and Disney.
..... Avengers is now positioned to reach $1 billion in global grosses in a much-needed win for Disney, which posted a $200 million loss after John Carter cratered at the box office this year. It's also a validation of Marvel's strategy to build a franchise by turning out single titles -- Iron Man, its sequel, Thor and Captain America -- and then bring the characters together. Avengers also could reboot the Hulk film franchise.
Among other records, Avengers is the first film to cross $200 million in only three days of play at the domestic box office. It also scored the biggest Saturday gross of all time, earning $69.7 million.
Spider-man's costume was conceptually faithful yet certainly wasn't strictly what was seen in the comics. He also had organic web spinners rather than mechanical ones. I didn't have a problem with either because they got all the other important stuff right.I know it's faithful to the comics, but that helmet/headdress of Loki's looked kinda dumb.![]()
Weren't you complaining about people changing Superman's outfit? I would have thought you would have liked comicbook faithfulness at all costs.
