It was ok, that’s why it’s confusing why it did worse. Ok I get it TFA was a cultural event, but I don’t think TLJ was so much worse.
The box office really reduces everything to a dollar value doesn't it? To this competition, like you often hear or read someone proudly declare their personal liking or disliking of a movie is the correct one because such and such a movie earned this figure at the box office. Winner winner chicken dinner. Obviously it's a business and money speaks.

You make a good point about the wave that The Force Awakens rode in on. I was really excited to see it. I was mostly very pleased but I'm a Luke fan, he had a pithy little scene at the end! I doubt TLJ didn't compare as well because Luke died (it did taint the movie for me but I still paid to see it). Sometimes people get lazy for a second outing and think they will wait to see it on a different platform.

But, that's just it. It was a cultural even, pretty much a one shot in terms of marketing and promotion. I can recall similar around Episode 1, between toys, Pepsi cans, TIME magazine, and that's just the stuff I remember.

End War is actually a pretty similar phenomenon. It has taken how ever many movies (someone will correct me-I really don't care) and this culmination is pretty much a one shot of that culmination. Again, I see a similar saturation of the market, with toys, and advertising, and various media outlets taking up the promotional work.

I think with the variety of viewing options now this has more impact.

Can only speak for myself but I have been waaay more invested in Star Wars than The Avengers. I care more about it. I enjoyed The Avengers, its off shoots and how it wound up. However it's seriously a mix of impossible 'powers' and ridiculous tech. I will never see it as anything else and for that reason it's popcorn value. I won't pay to see any more but will happily wait to see more one day on TV. Star Wars feels different. I actually bought into the story of farm boy Luke and I get how scavenger Rey appeals too. It's no documentary but it's relatable in my little girl's mind I still tap into  I wouldn't care if I was the only person in the theatre and it lost a box office competition with Battlefield Earth I want to see it through.

Same here. Luke was someone I wanted to be when I grew up (the green lightsaber not withstanding-I prefer blue) and Rey is a character that I am highly invested in.

Marvel is a fun distraction, but I am seriously feeling like they have taken me hostage (metaphorically speaking) with all the marketing. I'm over it.

Nice breakdown of the $1.22B opening weekend:

How's it doing on the inflation adjusted measures?

Don't get why there's always so much hype on the raw numbers when it doesn't tell you whether it actually sold more tickets than the older films.

Probably Endgame, I think Star Wars hype, while still very high, is not as strong as it used to be. Wherever Avengers hype is peaking right now.

My favorite movie ranking website is They Shoot Pictures, Don't They. The problem with Rotten Tomatoes is that a review that says "It was a pretty good movie" is considered exactly the same as "IT WAS THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE!"

I just pulled up the top all time domestic grosses adjusted for inflation on Box Office Mojo.
  1. Gone With the Wind - $1,822,598, 200
  2. Star Wars - $1,604,857,600
  3. The Sound of Music - $1,283,791,300
  4. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial - $1,278,107,600
  5. Titanic - $1,221,303,800
  6. The Ten Commandants - $1,180,310,000
  7. Jaws - $1,153,990,200
  8. Doctor Zhivago - $118,460,500
  9. The Exorcist - $996,498,500
  10. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves - $982,090,000
  11. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $974,117,00
Endgame is at #129 with $393,446,989,
I honestly had no idea ET, Jaws, or The Exorcist were that popular.

It’s all about how long they were in theaters and their competition. Gone with the wind was THE movie to see for a long time. Titanic stayed in theaters for like a year. Endgame may have a chance to catch TFA for domestic but anything in top 8 (adjusted for inflation) or so is not possible.

Yup

Even in the 90s there was usually one "summer blockbuster" each year

These days we have a situation where captain marvel Is being forced out of theatres by a movie she's in!!
