It's weird how I get this mental picture of people on forums like this according to what their avatar is.
It sure is strange how many guys on this board have big boobs!
Seriously though, avatars are merely our on-line personalities, currently I'm wearing
The Death of Rats because it took me a
very short time to be sickened by the invasion of the ponies and I needed something less *rainbow* to wear.
Most of all they mean having a short-cut to the personality of the person whose post you're reading; sometimes you can see that it is a politically inflexible person, sometimes you spot a sports fan, sometimes it's someone interested in vehicles, sometimes people celebrate some festival of sorts (it varies in seriousness from
Towel Day to
Bastille Day) or some (new('ish)) entertainment-industry output... And then there are the '
trademark' avatars (I feel oddly naked without a La Linea av).
They are also often used to make a joke ("Aha, the user is a jokester!") sometimes even a 'joke event'; sombreros or canon violation anyone?
To me, avatars mean that I get a glimpse of whom I'm talking to and that I'm able to give the same back.
