Avatars and what they mean to you?

PurpleLady

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
It's weird how I get this mental picture of people on forums like this according to what their avatar is. It's almost as if I were to meet them, I would expect them to look like their avatar!

I guess that means subconsciously I want to have purple skin.

I am a cantankerous feline that enjoys lasagna as well as inflicting physical and emotional abuse on mentally-challenged canines. I also occasionally mail my friends to Abu Dhabi.

I am exactly like my avatar.

If that's how people see me, they're right.

My avatar is a combination of all my [pathetic] artistic ability, self-image, and partial fantasy of actually being a science officer rather than a piano player.

The main thing I notice about your avatar is that you draw noses the same way I do.

My beard is very impressive, especially if I misplace my tweezers.

(a lifelong Tintin fan)

I'm a tough-as-nails yet awesomely attractive female Space Marine and the only person in the galaxy standing between planet Earth and utter annihilation by an ancient race of sentient machines.

Not sure what mine says about me... since I was a little kid I wondered what that pipe they'd added in the middle of Scotty's Animated Trek engine room was for. Once I saw STXI... I knew.

I am a majestic feline

Seriously though I identify with cats much more so than dogs and I tend to be an independent person so, I guess the avatar is pretty apt

It's also a lolcat. I have a thing for lolcats.

My avatar's the Burning Man logo. Burning Man is a month away now, so it does a good job about representing what I'm thinking about.

It sure is strange how many guys on this board have big boobs!

Seriously though, avatars are merely our on-line personalities, currently I'm wearing The Death of Rats because it took me a very short time to be sickened by the invasion of the ponies and I needed something less *rainbow* to wear.

Most of all they mean having a short-cut to the personality of the person whose post you're reading; sometimes you can see that it is a politically inflexible person, sometimes you spot a sports fan, sometimes it's someone interested in vehicles, sometimes people celebrate some festival of sorts (it varies in seriousness from Towel Day to Bastille Day) or some (new('ish)) entertainment-industry output... And then there are the 'trademark' avatars (I feel oddly naked without a La Linea av).
They are also often used to make a joke ("Aha, the user is a jokester!") sometimes even a 'joke event'; sombreros or canon violation anyone?

To me, avatars mean that I get a glimpse of whom I'm talking to and that I'm able to give the same back.

I used to go through avatars a lot depending on my mood and whatever the flavour of the day is at the time. For some reason, I haven't been too fussed to change mine for over 2 months, now. Maybe that behaviour represents a degree of contentedness and stability in my life at present? Perhaps it more represents sheer laziness in that I could easily going over to the UCP and clicking on the various things, but can't be bothered. Or maybe I just really like my avatar. Who knows?

Is Misc. going through a "I am my avatar" phase lately?
I predict a "Would you date your avatar?" thread in the near future.

I predict worse things. Far worse things.
