Avatar is stupid

FWIW, I don't believe we know how the Na'vi/natives "see." It could be they don't see color the same way humans do and that the "blue" tone of the natives is suitable camoflauge/blending in to the background an environment for the creatures that've evolved on Pandora.

This must have been some spectacle in the cinema for it to have received the accolades it has.

Strip away the SFX though, and there isn't much there.

Actually no. About two hours in I was ready for it to end. Even a two hour travelogue of this funky place was MORE than enough.

Unfortunately it had almost an hour(not to mention about eighteen more stereotypes)to go.

By the time we got to level ten and the BIG BOSS of the video ga......errrr, I mean "movie", I was bored completely shitless.

But then, I've always found watching other people play video games, be it my friends or even James Cameron, to be coma-inducing!

Redoing the ending of ALIENS but reversing who was good and who was bad makes it self-plagarisingly stupid.

"Let go of him, you bitch!"

And why is their blood red?
If this isn't, like, a reference that I'm missing, I'd be happy to go into agonizing detail about the superiority of hemoglobin over other respiratory pigment choices. :)

Especially those perfidious vanabins!

I just saw this movie for the first time on Sunday night on Bluray.

I thought it was (ironically) bland, generic and soul-less. Much like the Avatars themselves really.

Yes, it was Dances with Wolves in space. But unlike Dances with Wolves I just could not find the effort to invest emotionally in any of the characters. I really could not care less about any of them while I was watching this. To me, this one was DOA.

I completely don't understand all the fuss over it. I thought both District 9 and Star Trek were vastly superior films..

Ditto! I finally saw it last night and was completely underwhelmed. *yawn* It's a PRETTY film, I'll grant that... but not much substance.

I actually laughed out loud at the point after they attacked the home tree thingy... imagining what the big bad 'Colonel' dude would put on his FITREP/Eval.

'Persevered against arrow-slinging perfectly-shaped blue critters using modern firepower with few odds and no casualties. Killed a tree.' :guffaw:

(The fact that the movie practically pauses for something like 10 seconds after it falls over before the planes/thopters moved off was REALLY hysterical. Like I should care about this big tree?)

Still, YMMV.

Cheers,
-CM-

That's a pointless argument in my opinion. What's left of Star Wars if you strip away the visual effects? And with that I even mean the Alien make up. Because what has been done with real make up in 1977 is now done with CGI, let's not forget about that fact.

It's not a pointless argument. If you agree that without the CGI there's not much there of value, then it's another example of that tedious trend of style over substance. Which is of course becoming more prevalent as CGI becomes more advanced. It's all about the spectacle now.

Star Wars:

  • A young man comes of age, loses everything, and finds adventure and purpose.
  • A selfish pirate learns there are things worth fighting for, wins the heart of a woman who, before, he didn't deserve.
  • An old man comes full circle in his life, rights a mistake he once made, sets a new generation on the right path, and sacrifices himself to become an example to them.
  • A young woman succeeds in her righteous mission to bring peace and freedom back to billions - trillions of beings.
  • A warped and tortured young man, who'd grown up letting darkness triumph over his whiney, tortured soul, sees the light WAY too late to save anybody but himself and his son.
  • Lotsa shit blows up real good.

Avatar:

  • Jake gets laid, forgets to negotiate, gets lotsa people killed, acts like a self-serving douche.
  • Some military guy acts like a colossal cliche,
  • Lotsa stuff blows up real good.
  • Evil corporations, military bad, Iraq war bad, yaddayadda...
  • Nobody seems to learn anything.
