I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen.

Go tell the Spartans, passerby,
That here, by Spartan law, we lie
--Epitaph of the 300 Spartans composed by Simonides
I wracked my brain for something for the August Challenge and came up with this--I hope it either hasn't been done before or that it's been a while since it was done. In any event, here goes:
In this challenge, I'm asking you to write a story where the protagonist(s) have to take a stand.
It can be a stand based on principle, one dealing with a relationship, on morals, against an invasion force, whatever you wish.
The protagonist(s) can come from any era of Trek and can be original characters from your own series or canon characters.
The protagonist(s) must pay a very real price for their act: personal, professional, physical, emotional--a price must be paid and it must be a steep one.
Finally, the act must have lasting consequences for good or ill for all the participants involved.
Now, here's the mechanics:
Story must be a maximum of 3000 words: Like a TOS miniskirt--long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to be interesting.
Don't forget to link your story here for voting purposes.
Closing date: 23:59 PDT August 31, 2007
Good Luck Everyone and let's see those principled stands, heartrending relationship tales, and forlorn hopes!
