August Challenge: Taking a Stand

I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen.

I wracked my brain for something for the August Challenge and came up with this--I hope it either hasn't been done before or that it's been a while since it was done. In any event, here goes: :)

In this challenge, I'm asking you to write a story where the protagonist(s) have to take a stand.

It can be a stand based on principle, one dealing with a relationship, on morals, against an invasion force, whatever you wish.

The protagonist(s) can come from any era of Trek and can be original characters from your own series or canon characters.

The protagonist(s) must pay a very real price for their act: personal, professional, physical, emotional--a price must be paid and it must be a steep one.

Finally, the act must have lasting consequences for good or ill for all the participants involved.

Now, here's the mechanics:

Story must be a maximum of 3000 words: Like a TOS miniskirt--long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to be interesting.

Don't forget to link your story here for voting purposes.

Closing date: 23:59 PDT August 31, 2007

Good Luck Everyone and let's see those principled stands, heartrending relationship tales, and forlorn hopes! :)

Oh, shoot! I had a good one (at least I thought so) that I already incorporated into "Through a Glass, Darkly" where Dr. Castille faces off with Captain Akinola over the EMH in sickbay. Now I'll have to come up with something else! :D

Great idea, David. Should bring in some interesting entries!

Hmm, I feel a Beverly Crusher story coming on!! (Or is that too obvious?)

Nice idea David!

This is crazy. Alot of people must think like me. I was going to write a story about Mr. Homn defending Lwazana Troi from Jem'hadar when Betazed fell.

When I go to Memory Alpha to look up Homn; I discover that someone else wrote the exact same thing in Tales of the Dominion War.

...just when I thought I was being original. :(

Oh well, time for plan B. (come up with a plan B) :)

Aww man! How the hell am I supposed to make THAT humorous? If they've gotta pay a real price for taking a stand, that's depressing! I hate writing depressing fics!

Weird. My idea for last month's challenge actually works for this month's challenge too.

I have a title, and everything: "Murtad," which is Arabic for "Apostate".

Now I just have to find time to write it. :(

Well, mine is written, and should be posted shortly. I've been home resting up from a case of food poisoning, so I had lots of time to write. :(

I'm not entirely happy with it, but I'm not sure how to make it better. For once, the word-limit was a serious constraint.

I think I'm going to treat my challenge entry as the 'theatrical cut,' and then complete a longer 'director's cut' for the Supermax archive thread.

I sure hope more than two entries make it in.

I was thinking. I'm going to a sci-fi convention from the 29th to the 4th.

So if I don't post (or vote :( ), that's why.
