attention girls: embrace your inner...

Am I alone in that I actually enjoy clothes shopping? I go in knowing full well things won't always fit, but I love going through the racks anyway. I even like going through stuff I won't fit in, like designer stuff. I love purses and shoes more than clothes, though.

Still, I'd rather blow $100 at a craft or bookstore.

Foundation is evil. It will just make her skin worse, generally speaking. I use it to cover up disfigurations but I loathe it, really. Try what you can to make sure she doesn't set down that path.

Well, alas, I don't think she's going to listen to me. I want to tell her that foundation is for women who want the flawless, dewey skin of teenagers - before they have ruined their skin wearing foundation. But, I know if I tell her that she'll just look at me in that way that teenagers do, you know, like you're talking Martian, or something!

It's funny - I guess I missed the stage during my early teens (or whenever it happens) that girls start to experiment with makeup. By the time I was interested, I was too old to get away with making beginner mistakes so I just didn't bother (actually to be more honest, that's more along the lines of didn't dare try!).

This is me totally! I do wear make up now and again - probably once or twice a year, but that's it. I don't think I do a very good job of applying it, either.

Kira's Mom, I don't mind clothes shopping, but only when I'm feeling okay about myself. At other times I just don't do it, or I just go into a store and buy what I need without trying it on, take it home and hope for the best. It isn't the best shopping strategy, I admit!

I LOVE clothes shopping. I can spend more money on clothes shopping in 5 minutes than I can otherwise in a full day.

I enjoy clothes shopping when I'm in the mood...but I can get out of the mood pretty quickly when something goes wrong, and the thing that most often goes wrong is...

...Why don't they make pants long enough for me? OK, they do, but sometimes they are ridiculously difficult to find. I am fairly tall (5'8 1/2"), but not that tall, so how come even "talls" (quotation marks used deliberately to indicate the sarcasm of the writer) are sometimes not tall enough? (The exception is clothing from specialty stores that specialize in clothing for tall women - those are usually far too long unless they are something I intend to wear really high heels with. Weird.) I have become pretty good at looking at the hems of prospective pants and determining how easy it would be to let them out, but it ticks me off to spend $80 on a pair of slacks and then have to spend time or money altering them. I do it, of course, but I am annoyed by it.

But when things are going well and plenty of tall slacks are in stock, I do enjoy shopping, and I love wearing a new outfit. Love.

No...I think most women enjoy clothes shopping. I'm not crazy about it because it's just so time consuming. I'd rather someone just do it for me and I'll pay them.

Welcome to my world. Try and find pants long enough for me, who is nearly 5'11"?

^ I know! That's one of the things that really bothers me about the talls-that-aren't-very-tall thing. Of course it's personally annoying when I can't find pants that are long enough. For example, I went shopping for casual slacks a couple of weeks ago, went to three different stores, and I found exactly ONE style that's long enough, and it is just barely long enough - and if I wanted to wear them with heals, I'd be out of luck. That's annoying in and of itself.

But then I think about wearing these slacks with, say, boots - they'd look ridiculous. And then about I think people who are even taller, and you know what? It's just not right.

Why call them talls if they aren't? Do they think we won't notice or what? Grrrrrr....

It could be worse, of course. One of my sisters wears plus-size talls, and those are pretty darn rare. Apparently you're only supposed to be plus-size if you're short. So she basically buys every pair of pants that she finds that fit and that are long enough, and she isn't exactly overrun with pants. And a coworker is a size 2 in talls - she can find stuff in catalogs, but almost never in the store. So she basically just buys the same thing over and over again, because at least she knows that it will fit.

"Talls." Hah!

You two need to shop in the UK - there's a store there called Long Tall Sally - at 5'9" I'm short for their clothes - and they understand that tall women are as thin and as fat as shorter women.

I loved that shop :)

There is a store here called Tall Girl - they sound very similar to Long Tall Sally. I haven't bought anything from them because I don't really like to buy clothes without trying them on, but one just opened up here, so I might have a new place to shop.

I'm also excited that they sell pajamas. Imagine - pajamas that are long enough! What luxury! ;)

 I have completely the opposite problem. I'm about 5'1". It's difficult to find things that fit without alterations.

Here's a tiny pic (sized down for identity stuff) that demonstrates my height more clearly!

My other sister - the one who doesn't wear talls ;) - is 5'2". So yes, I know you petite gals have your own problems. But at least you can hem your pants up if they're too long, and at least around here, petites are more readily available than talls. You usually gotta pay, though - they don't come cheap, particularly for dress slacks.

Moving on from clothes, to fruit :)

The little trampledamages wanted to try a mango, so I bought one this morning. Any tips on how I tell when it's ripe and ready to eat?

It's almost certainly pretty hard right now - they have to be picked green and shipped green because they bruise pretty easily. But once they're ripe, they should smell nice, and they should indent slightly - but only slightly - when you press them with your thumb.

Believe me or believe me not, but the U.S. has a National Mango Board. Yeah. Anyway, here's its website, which includes advice on how to select one: http://www.mango.org/en/retailers/mango-messages/how-to-choose-a-mango.aspx

Dress Barn Woman and Catherine's are pretty good about their plus sizes fitting taller women. I get most of my clothes both places. (I'm 5'8).

I've gotten into frozen fruit these days. It's just too expensive to buy what turns out to be a pack of mostly overripe berries. I opened a bag of frozen raspberries last night and I was in heaven!

Awesome, thank you!

Crusher Disciple, do you eat them frozen? Or defrost them? Do they taste like fresh?
